What's all this then?
Any thoughts? I'm not sure how it would work or if it would last but it is a neat idea

It looks to me like another piece of electronics to cause future problems. If your battery is good, it should start the engine even if the lights are left on, and even if it doesn't, the driver should notice the slow cranking and turn them off without any help.,

My Ranger has it, if the lights stays on it will basically turn that light off when voltage drops enough.
When I crank it up I don't have to do anything special to get it started, just turn the key.

That says it all for me. My Ranger is a POS that nothing electrical works much of the time. Anything that makes a good vehicle more like a Ford Ranger is a huge step backward.

Well my battery is getting drained quickly, not helped by the fact that my wife doesn't drive it much. I'm getting the starter changed because I'm hoping that is part of the problem [one day when we were reconnecting the battery, something in the starter popped and there was smoke, but it still starts]. If that doesn't fix it then I might spring for one until I can get it rewired.

fix the problem, don't bandaid it. If you have a huge short, it's gonna tax the hell out of your alternator when the car is running and cause future problems.

I'm going to fix it if I get to go back for R&R, I don't really have the luxury of fixing the problem now, however.

I wouldn't want to drive it and risk a fire, if there is a big enough short to drain the battery quickly, there is a potential fire. Safety first, I hope you find it! Chasing electrical shorts isn't fun but just start pulling suspect wires and fuses one at a time with an ammeter showing the drain across the battery, until the drain goes away, then fix the source of the problem. I have a lot of reman spare starters since I switched my v8s to mini starters. Do you have a staggered or straight bolt pattern starter? (I have both).

She has been driving the truck for the time being, but it has killed 2 batteries in the 4 month I have been deployed, luckily they have been on warranty. I have a staggered-mount starter but I already bought a new one. I plan on doing a full rewire when I get back for good, so hopefully I won't have to trace it, I just hate having the car sit for so long without even being started

i run a 300 amp continuous/2000amp surge moroso battery disconnect switch on the tail panel of my camaro . the battery disconnect switch is turned off anytime i'm not in my car . so anytime i go to the store or wherever even a gas station i turn the power off then when i'm ready to leave the switch is turned on .this way i know my electrical system is cold everytime i leave my camaro and no risk of any electrical issues while i'm away from it
moroso heavy duty battery disconnect ....
