292 cam

I ran a 292 comp cam with a 350 30 over. Edelbrock Victor intake 750 double pumper. 1 3/4 headers, 10 to 1 compression in my Z. Around 3300 to 3400 pounds. Set of gears and 10 inch slicks. Best time was 11.98, not bad for that cam. I would say the 292 cam is a damm good street cam. O yea a 10 inch converter.

Supposed to be one in my 454. I have plenty of vacuum. Idle at around 650-700 with manual trans. Pulls like mule from 2200 on up maybe little lower.

No problems puttin around at 12-1500 since I dialed in the carb too. Nice lopey idle. Never checked mpg and never will.

Yeah I have no power brakes. Only thing using vacuum is Advance and pcv valve. But I set my carb with a vac guage it was actually pretty decent IIRC.

Its more than likley a 8 to 1 motor if it is a 292 is way to much cam for it. I would not put a 292 in it unless you have at least a 10 to 1 motor

I had a 292 shaft in a 331 and a 406. Both engines were 10.25:1 and they ran great.

The old 292 magnum is still a great cam......but its really going to suck in a stock low compression motor.

To get the most out of this cam in your setup you will need.

More compression
Aftermarket intake
Headers
A good carburetor
Minimum 3200 stall/ or manual trans
Better heads w/ good valvesprings
3.42 or lower rear gear (3.73 would be much better)

Most of us gear heads have made the mistake of cramming a huge cam in a stock motor. It always yields really bad results, and you always end up wishing you had gotten a smaller cam.

Fwiw I ran a 292 magnum in a 11:1 406 with a set of Dart II heads (yes old), Vic jr intake and 4000 stall in a truck and it was flat out wicked. If you support this cam with the right parts its a great choice.....in an otherwise stock motor though, a very poor choice that you will regret.
