LSx Wiring Harness
Not sure if this should be in this section or Electrical, Mods move as necessary.
I have my harness all mocked up on the engine stand and was wondering what everyone is using to wrap their harness before they drop it in the engine bay. Any help is appreciated

O'Reilly's Auto Parts keeps the split plastic wire mold in boxes in the back and you buy it by the foot. All sizes too, I bought 10' of 1", 3/4", and 1/2" cheap. Don't buy it in the bags hanging in the front, to expensive.

the stuff you can buy at most stores is too shiny and is extremely flimsy and looks nothing like the OE stuff. order from Mouser Electronics, or some other electronics parts house.

split loom
I get mine from parts express, you can get it in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1" sizes. For the price you pay for a single size at the parts store...you can buy enough of this in various sizes to do the whole job.
http://www.parts-express.com/wizards...ter=split+loom
The way I do it is I loosely wrap the harness in harness wrap (looks like black tape, but no sticky). This keeps stray wires from poking through the loom at bends and such.
And then I put split loom over that in the specific size I need. Then use either black wire ties or black tape on the ends to keep the loom from coming off. Looks pretty good and "factory" like.

I'm still making speaker kick panels, just closing on a new home due to close 5/01/2013. I have a few sets ready to ship so feel free to ask me about that.

Sam, not everyone has enough forethought to do that.

My loom was muddy, oily, bent, and cut....the price of split loom is cheap enough to warrant replacing it.

My harness came from a truck and the wrapping was covered in dirt/grime. Oh and i forgot to save it as well
What is the wrap that sticks to itself, has anyone used this?

I don't re-use anything that was originally on my car.
Once it's off, it's in the trash. 32 years of grease and grime ....uh...no thanks.

I don't know what it's called, but it's a royal pain in the ass to trouble shoot wires in that mess.
You have to unravel it from an end point to where you need to get if there's a splice.
I've got a 442 as well with that crap and I want to get rid of it all.
Convoluted tubing is 100x easier to use and work with.

My LS harness was down right nasty as well, truck harness with 10 years of dirt/grime and fell apart when the wires were taken out.

split loom that you can buy at the auto store is not ideal for use under the hood. you need high quality loom that is rated to withstand engine bay temperatures and will resist fuel and other fluids. Like mentioned above, Mouser electronics carries it as well as other sellers such as Waytek.
If you feel like spending crazy money you can buy the Mil spec stuff such as Raychem DR-25 heatshrink. This is the stuff military harnesses are covered in. looks good and is tough as nails but overkill for a street car.
I build My own LS harnesses and use Waytek split loom to cover them

Hey, we needs to talk homie!!!!!
I want to do my next harness this winter on my own.
I've seen the LS1tech articles, but I'll be damned if it doesn't just confuse the sh** out of me.
I'll PM ya.
