WooHoo! WWII Bomb Detonated in Germany
A 550lb (250kg) bomb from World War II has been successfully detonated during a controlled explosion in a river in Potsdam, Germany. Nine tons of straw had to be placed on top of the bomb, to contain the blast and shrapnel.

If you're wondering what one of these looks like after almost 70 years...
The bomb would have originally contained 250-300 lbs of explosive.
The blast looked smaller than a bomb of this sze would produce, IMO.
I'm thinking the guys that do this stuff like to use enough explosive to make a show whether the old bomb detonates or not.

^Reminds me of the old joke where the country boy gets pulled over on the river and was being asked about his questionable fishing methods.....he hands the warden a lit stick of dynamite and asks him "you gonna talk or you gonna fish"? lmao

Hmm...under water and tons of wet hay? Would retard the effects a bit. See that high rooster tail? Lotsa energy.

my first time in iraq the airforce dropped a 500 pounder on a building we took sniper fire from. all we heard was the flyboys are comming in hot keep your head down.. a few minutes later im picking myself off the ground with my ears ringing and the worst headache ive ever had.... them big boys are nothing to play with. if we used more of them and less politics this war would have been over 5 years ago

The problem is the human error factor with bad intel leads to many civilian (women and children) casualties.
It's not an exact science in urban warfare.

From when was THAT??? - I hadnt heard of that in the last couple weeks.
alright, Potsdam is the other side of Germany (as seen from where I live, geographically)
So non the less, we had one a few city away from me this Monday - disarmed within an hour.
Amazing how many of these babies are still buried beneath my feet.
