Deffinately a reason to run like crap!
Getting ready to pull the engine. Pulled #1 plug out to roll engine over to TDC before pulling dizzy. Can't really tell in this pic but something connected with the #1 plug. Any ideas ya'll?

As for your lifter rounded out. It is supposed to be flat. I've had lifters that looked like that. I'm not a head guru but I believe those are the steam holes the little 1/8 holes between and close to the cylinder. I guess you know why the gap closed up. Been there also. Great progress man.

You think the steam holes allowed extra heat to expand the ring which closed the gap and broke the piston?

I would know for sure. I'm no expert. I know what did it on my engine was detonation. I was running 10-1+ compression with the 305 4bl heads and I was always fighting detonation. I tried curve kits etc and no fix. Mine blew one night racing my cousin in his challenger 440. He told me later he got out of his when valves started floating. Needless to say the next morning I fired my car up and I heard a bang and metal and then it started missing. It bent the valves and needed a rebuild. From the picture the piece of piston probably closed up your gap.

Yep no doubt piece of piston closed the plug gap. I was wondering if the steam holes helped heat up that area of the cylinder and cause ring gap to close and being the ring end gap was not set correct when the motor was built, the ring gap closed up and shoved upwards breaking piston. I hope I didn't make you dumber by reading that. Lol.

Lifters should be slightly convex in nature. If you sit one on a glass table it should rock slightly.
Good Lifter on Left Bad on Right:
Again, good on left bad on right:
The lifters in the pics above have approx 90k on them and came from my 72 C10 350 Cheyenne last week.

I may have found out why it was a little cheaper than the rest. 1. The load leveler is a piece of crap. 2. The boom is not long enough to reach center of motor so I had to kinda drag the motor forward until it started coming up. Well it got the motor and tranny out but there's no way to put a engine in with it. It would be real easy to do if I had taken my nose piece off and bumper but I ain't ready to do that yet. I'll post pics later. Charlton

Since the front is so long you have to come from the side to pull the engine. I did the same as you from the front and just scratched my head. A search enlightened me to the side pull.
