Door edge guard install help!

Well I purchased a set of nos door edge guards for my 81 z . Started to install the pass side and its damageing the paint right away! Car is done in urethene ages ago no issues with paint up until now. Is there a trick to this? Looks like they just push on?

I used a rubber mallet and tapped them on. They are going to fit tight so they do not come off.

with the rolled edges, thats what i figured but its going to mess up the paint bad. Has anyone had to spread them out to fit?
