why do my lifters bleed down????

Im still having issues with lifter noise mainly on start up which is making me

This is on my newly built 383 and have run it for a a few rides now and have tried a new set of lifters (sealed power) and changed the oil from running in oil to a racing 25/50 and the new oil did make the hot oil pressure better but still hearing a few lifters tap untill they pump up in the mornings or after sitting for a few hours.
springs measure 110# at installed height and lift is not exceeding the heads
So what else can cause the problem do I try a different brand lifter as much as i dont want to take the intake back off I would if I think it will cure the issue.

I would try a lighter oil, possibly 10-40, although the lifters shouldn't be bleeding down no matter what oil you use, lighter oil will get to the lifters quicker on start up versus the heavier oil.

Im running sealed power lifters also. I have no problem with them and I also used to run 20-50 oil. I changed to 15-40 cause it still has zinc in it.

There is no good reason to run a 50 weight oil especially if you live in a cooler climate. IF you do run 50 weight, you have to let the engine warm up completely before doing anything with it.

Today's oils are still better than they were 40 years ago, especially the synthetic and synthetic blends.

As for your lifters bleeding down, I've never experienced your problem. You might try synthetic oil as it sticks to the parts much better than regular oil. I had a 80 Chevette that rattled loudly when it was first started up. At 5K miles I changed the oil to Mobil 1 and the rattle can stopped making noise.

This is what I did ^ I have speed pro rollers and had one lifter bleed down.
I was running 10-40 oil drop-ed back to 5-30 and it helped a bunch.

Use a different oil filter. Try a Wix, NAPA Gold or AC Delco. Just get rid of the orange one.

Mine do it. I have no idea why. 2nd set of sealed power. They use the same lifters on 1.5 ratio smallblocks wiith 110# springs as they do with 1.7:1 ratio bigblocks and 130# springs,so I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with the load of the springs/rockers. Maybe the design of the lifter has excessive clearance.A lifter should not bleed down,and no matter what filter you use,there is never any oil pressure being stored in the system when the engine sits,all the oil runs out the main bearing bores and back into the pan. It seems to be a lifter issue,thats it.

My DD, 4.3 vortec V-6 was having bleed down issues. I could only get about a thousand miles out of an oil change before the lifters would bleed down overnight. For whatever reason once I switched to Rotella T, never had a bleed down issue again. 3000 + miles between oil changes now, lifters are quiet.

Before you condemn the filter idea try it. I have had numerous customers complain of noisy lifters at start up and cured the problems with a good filter. Every one had a colored filter; orange, green and yellow seem to be the worst offenders. I cut open a new Fram and kept it in the shop to show just how poor a filter it is. There was also a cut open WIX next to it to compare. One company spent money on PR and the other on building a quality filter. The difference in price is too small to make a difference to the customer, but big profits for Allied Signal.

Agree, what does the filter have to do with this? It's not a check valve. The lifter is preloaded and should hold. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

i cant see how a filter will do it and i have tried 2 different types already, its like the lifters that were sitting with the valves open overnight bleed down and when i start the engine it fires instantly and within a few seconds the pressure is at 70psi and the noise is gone I just hate having noise from a new engine. if i get bored enough i may try different brand lifters

When I worked for Chrysler they came out with a bulletin saying not to use Fram filters on the Cummings diesel or you would void your warranty. The problem was particles would break off the filter media and clog the jets spraying oil on the bottom of the pistons.

Hydraulic lifters have check valves and these same particles could get in there and keep the check valve from seating. Then the lifter collapses.
