S-10 manual steering box

I've heard alot about changing over to the manual S-10 sterring box. I was wondering who has done it and if you have any pictures of it on your car. I'm seriously thinking about doing this to my car.

Yeah, I've done it. Search this forum for manual steering box or s-10 manual steering and you should find some info about it.

Here's your options in a nutshell assuming you are working with a 70-81 2nd gen camaro that came factory with power steering:

1) find a manual steering box out of a '85-'91 (might be okay clear up to a '93) s-10 pickup (the cover should have four corner bolts, rather than 3) Use your current camaro power steering pitman arm on this manual box. These '85-'91 S-10 manual steering gears have the same sized pitman shaft as your power steering box allowing you to re-use your pitman arm.

2) change your centerlink and pitman arm to the manual version that came factory on the 70-73's with manual steering, then find a manual box out of a GM 70-79 passenger car or '82-'84 S-10 pickup. There are some other vehicles that came with a manual steering box that will work (some amc, jeep), check out the larescorp.com catalog, look for their #1275 and you'll see a list of potential donor vehicles that the steering gear came in.

3) keep your power steering center link, find a manual steering pitman arm from a 75-79 nova (or equivalent) and use that with the GM 70-79 passenger car or '82-'84 manual steering gear.

Option #1 is popular because it's a direct bolt-in with your existing pitman arm.

Option #3 is what I did because I was able to find a '75-'79 nova manual pitman arm.

When looking for a manual steering gear for option #2 or #3, make sure you avoid the ones that came in full size trucks, they have a different mounting pattern.

Also, if your camaro is pre '77 with factory power steering, you will need a steering coupler to adapt to the smaller shaft of the manual steering box.

THANKS BRO!!

I knew someone here did it. I found some info on it, but wanted to see what my options were. My friend owns a local junk yard and I can get pretty much anything (within reason) for free. For instance, I'm going to be getting my S-10 rear disk conversion for free, as long as I pull them. I guess it's not what you know.......at least not all the time!!!!

We used to call manual steering Armstrong Steering because if the vehicle wasn't moving, your arms better be strong! Once underway, you can hardly tell the difference EXCEPT when you get into trouble and need to do some REAL fast manuvering!

no problem. I was in the same boat as you and scoured for information, so the least I can do is share what I learned.

I'm on the lookout for a good deal on a manual steering gear from an '82-'84 S-10 (3 bolt cover) as mine has some pitman arm shaft movement causing it to wander a bit at highway speeds. I'd also consider one from a '85-'91 S-10 (4 bolt cover) as I do still have my power steering pitman arm on the shelf. So, if you stumble across an extra let me know. thanks!

I was out scouring the yard today to no avail. I will keep my eyes open for sure. If I don't find one I might loop my factory power steering box for now.

Anybody have pics of their looped power steering box or the S-10 manual box install??

Ok, I just left the junkyard and I have them run me the parts interchange for a 1979 Nova manual gearbox. This is what I've found out.....
Apollo 73-75
Buick Special 71-72
Century 73-74
Chevelle 71-77
Cutlass 73
Cutlass 76
Lemans 73-77
Monte Carlo 71
Nova 71-79
F85 71-72
Omega 73-79
Pheonix 77-79
Regal 73-74
Skylark 75-79
Sprint (GMC) 71-77
Tempest 71-72
Ventura II 71-77
All these manual gear boxes are interchangeable. I think the Nova should be the same mount as the Camaro. I think I'm going to look into it.
