Home made professional paint booth

Well, i am getting near painting my car, once i drop the engine and tranny in tonight, and then i can finish my prep work, but im thinking before i paint, i would like to build a professional paint booth/building.


We bought a cement mixer truck the other day, and im thinking im gonna lay a floor down in the next two month, and build the walls, doors, and rafters in shop class at school, bring a trailer in and take it home and assemble it.

Im not entirely sure what it should have in it, to make it the best place to paint in.

Heres my thoughts though

-Inside lined with puck board ( this way i can wash it down, and wipe dust off easily if need be.)

-slope the floor so i can take a garden hose inside and wash the walls down, and get rid of any dust

-Have a down draft booth,, with the vents going through tunnels in the floor to the outside ( also make it so water runs threw these tunnels and drains outside


im working on designing it right now, 14x28 foot building, ill upload a few design pictures when i finish, i would love to hear some input from you guys though, and im curious what would i have to do to make this booth work with the new water bourne paint policy canada is implementing, or is there any changes that have to be made?

bought my 2x4's yesterday, gonna start framing the walls on Tuesday in shop class at school. Building them in 8 foot sections, taking the trailer in one day and bringing them home, putting it together in the shop, and then painting my car, decided, to make it a temporary booth for now, finish my car, than make it into a 24x16 garage afterward, this way i don't waste 250 bucks worth of 2x4's, no idea what im doing for the door yet though.

Wookie paints cars and parts without the expensive booth. He has started using a large fan blowing upward with an old mattress cover to filter out the mist in the air. The newer paints are easier to clean up dust or dirt spots. Pulse Wookie to get his thoughts.

It's going ot be tricky to do down draft and wash it down inside while still draining the water that gets into the ducts. Best not to wash it down. or make sure your ducts have drains in the low point that wont plug up and hold water.
Be very careful what types of fans and fan motors you use! Especially if those motors are exhausting paint, not pushing in fresh air. The wrong type of motor can cause explosions should the brushes or windings ever arc when paint fumes are moving across them!

yeahhh, i am not sure which way i am going to have it, an exhuast fan would be better as it makes sure the air is sucked down, but it has to be the right motor like you said, thats why an input fan would be better.


Today i staked out where the concrete is going, in the next month things should really take shape. Getting 1 ton of concrete powder to try out for $50 so this pad is going to be a test for the 100x50 pad in the new shop. I hope it turns out alrightt.

I spent $160 on 2x4's, started framing the walls at school, im gonna built the rafters at my house though, as there gonna be too hard to transport, and it gives me something to do while im waiting.

Not entirely sure how im going to make the down draft into the floor though. it seems really tricky to go about.

One thing to consider too is where the clean air is going to be sucked in, becuase i want to use this in the winter, and snow could cause a problem.
