removing heater fan knobs 1970

wanted to ask about removing the small heater and fan knobs. got unit out. going to clean plastic cover and replace the black paper behind it. i did not want to crack cover.the black plastic pins on the inside are very brittle. thought i could take them out and slide control arms through front. is that the way to do it? thanks

Pliers with a towel, gently rock back & forth while pulling and the control knobs will come off. The fan switch unscrews from the back of the unit.
