solid body mount question
My '71 Z/28 which has been a drag car since '72 has solid body mounts that appear to be homemade . the left mount (drivers side ) under the firewall is approx 1/4" taller than a stock rubber mount , the pass side under the firewall is approx 5/16" taller than stock . I have not yet pulled the rear mounts out . Is there a reason for the taller than stock solid mounts that are at differant heights ? perhaps to put more weight over the drivers front tire ( or pass rear tire ) or to give more engine to hood clearance, or is this just due to undue care when building the mounts ? The car had the radiator support butchered severely during the lightening process and did not have any radiator core body mounts other than 2 bars bolted between the upper part of the rad support running down to the inside of the front frame horns. the car has welded subframe connectors . I have bought a new rad support and am in the process of returning the front end of the car to the as delivered configuration with all the (previously removed) bumper and body bracketry reinstalled . I would like to reinstall the rubber style body mounts but I read here recently that solid mounts are recommended if you have subframe connectors so I will probably go back to a solid mount . Iam thinking that I might install stock rubber mounts temperaily in order to install and lineup all the front end sheet metal and then make solid mounts to fit accordingly . are the after market solid mounts such as comp engineering or moroso differant heights or the same height as stock and consistant side to side

Peter...I had solid aluminum in both my 1st and 2nd Gen Camaro's. Mine were Moroso and all are the same thickness. Both cars had bolt in subframe connectors. I never noticed a difference in ride quality, maybe just a bit more engine and drivetrain noise. Yes, if you plan on keeping the subframe connectors stick with solid. I would not recommend aligning the sheetmetal with different types of mounts since it will move enough during the swap to require another alignment.

the taller size 'could' have been for additional hood clearance... but a 1/4"?.. that's a bit measely for that. And the fact that they're different sizes leads me to believe that it was just a botched job.
Get some decent solid body mounts and be done with it. There's more chance for the rubbers to squish and throw alignments off than the solids; in addition to what bmeyer said.

I prefer the idea of the interlocking pieces like Global West, etc. they have more of a secure appearing shoulder to secure against the frame.
