comp cams Xtreme Energy 294H (12-254-3)

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and have a few questions. Is any body running a a comp cams 294H (12-254-3) ? I bought one and i think the cam maybe a little to big for my application now. Its not like i didn't take the time to reserch the cam a little. even on the comp cams website thier dyno sheet is almost 100% the same as mine exept for the 1 3/4 headers. Mine are have 1 5/8. http://www.compcams.com/technical/Dy...94H-10_001.asp I feel like my setup is making more like 325HP not even close to what it should be. what did i do wrong?

any way i was expecting my 1980 camaro to run low to mid 12's and the best i got was 13.14 @103 mph.

here is my setup
WORLD PRODUCTS FULLY PORTED SPORTMAN II
MANLEY SERVERE DUTY VALVES 2.02 X 1.6 (STOCK LENGTH)
VICTOR JR (FULLY PORTED)
MAGNUM 1.6 ROLLER ROCKERS
STOCK BOTTOM END WITH 9:1 TO 9:5 COMPRESSION
HOLLEY 750 DOMINATER (MAYBE A LITTLE TO BIG)
COMP CAMS 294H (12-254-3)
TURBO 400 W/TRANS BRAKE
B&M HOLE SHOT 3000 ( LEAVING AT 3400 ON THE BRAKE) I know wrong converter for a brake.
4:10 gears
28" MICKY DRAG RADIALS
CALTRACS
MSD 6AL-2 W/ PRO BILLET DIST.

car wieghs 3690 with me in it and 3450 empty. any help or advise will be greatly appeciated. Thanks

That seems about right IMHO....gross 325hp is not going to get you in the low 13s in a 1980 Camaro.

Really ???? not acording to these calculators.

http://golenengineservice.com/html/calculators.html

I know i can hit the twleves with this setup. i'm going to change a few things and see if it helps

1) i'm going to put and RPM PERFORMER intake on it W/the center divider milled out like the RPM AIRGAP to see if i can gain some low end torque.

check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_ART4SBmdg

2) i just bought a set of full 1.5 roller rockers rather than the 1.6 magnum roller tips

3) just ordered a 4000 stall

took my trans in to get freshend up and found oud my pump was bad.

My 81Z had about 365hp 360ci with 3.73 gears and wouldnt run any quicker than 14.5. Sometimes 15s!

at a quick glance, i can tell you that your compression is way too low for that cam, it should be up to about 11:1.

Yea i know. it is a pretty low. i kinda took a chance. especially when i saw their dyno sheet. I wanted a very mean sounding machine. That .250 in/ .256 exh duration at .050 definitely sounds mean but unfortunately, its not the recipe for HP. I should have went a cam that has about .238-.246 duration at .050 or more compression of course. but any how its a little too late. any ideas on how i can get this cam to run better with this setup? are the changes i'm doing going to be better or worse?

oh and im going to try and go with a regular 4150 holley 750 rather than that monster 750 dominator that i'm running. i dont have the hp or cubes to make that carb happy yet. My motor is probly just tickling it. I'll just put it away til i get my 406 built.

well don't think the block was decked. but it was pretty smooth. im using some felpro 1094's .015 compressed. so i think i might have about 9:5:1 now.

Well thats just it. been having problems trying to figure out where and how to determine the best timing for this beast. it seems to like alot of initial timing. probly becuase of the low compression. since i have a pro billet mech. adv. distributer, im limited to 4 advance bushings. (18,21,25,28) well right now i have the 18 deg. with about 26 deg total timing. havnt taken it back to track since i did that and changed the intake. i'm shifting at about 6400-6500. i wish they had lower bushings sizes. like 7,10,13 etc.

nothing wrong with alot of initial especially with that cam, get you total to 37-38 degrees then worry about the initial.

Ditto that cam really needing 11 to 1 CR, imho too..

At 9.5 to 1, no more than an old Isky 264 Mega will do you proud.

And if you want to rpm her, then install Isky's little Z-20 solid lifter cam.

that cams just to big for that motor period! try advancing it another 4 degrees maybe? i did that with an old 350 with the 286 magnum 8 degrees ahead[good cam] and it made a huge difference that could really be felt we are doing that now too with a low compression 454 in my friends 71ss with a 292 magnum

I think that is your immediate problem. I agree with Mwilson.
