General purpose spray gun?

I know spray guns get kicked around here; I searched but didn't find what I was looking for.
Here goes:
I have an older I-R 5hp single-stage compressor rated 12.5@40psi, 11.0@90psi and I want a good primer gun <$100. The gun may see some finish coats, but on rough work-underbody, engine compartment, etc. I was thinking that a standard gun would be good, but would I be better with HVLP to reduce waste?
I am a painting novice and I'm starting panel repairs (DA/sandblast/weld/fill fenders, etc.) and the parts will likely sit in my garage in primer for over a year before I am ready to paint the car.
Ultimately the car will be bc/cc urethane PPG or Glassurite (spelling!?), but I'll use a "decent" (Devilbiss) HVLP gun for that.

Thanks

for under a hundred dollars you can get a small Porter-Cable HVLP gun at Lowes. It's a decent little gun...i use it for staining and finishing cabinets and woodwork, but would use it with primer and the like....you can find it online or in the air tool area...hope this helps

I got a refurbished platinum HVLP gun for 175 bucks thru sharpe. Thats one of the better guns it used have of the air as a normall HVLP. Refurbised are pretty much brand new. Id go with a 1.5 tip that is a good all around tip id say itll work for colors adn clears adn most primers not as good wiht high build though buy will work wiht some reducer. Sharpe also has Cobalt guns and alot of guys get them for primer them were 100 bucks or less refurbised adn i think you get a regulator with them too i dont remember for sure though. Check them out at www.sharpe1.com. They got all the info on there guns. you just have to email them adn ask them for the refurbised listings and prices. hope this helps
