the motor is out of a 73-77 truck and the heads are HI-Proformance heads out of an 86-90 something.

I would think long and hard about using her for a core to make a 496 out of and I did out of my good "TSC", '75 454 P/U motor that had a bad crank in it is all!

550hp at 5500 rpm and 580 t at 4500 rpm will come easy w/ 9.8 CR., big valve heads, headers and something like no more than a CC 282S solid lifter cam or whatever Isky's 280 Mega solid lifter cam is?

I have this UDHarold solid lifter cam in my bedroom closet and I figure it's worth at least 50, maybe 75 hp more!

278/249/161, 110/106, .618" gross lift and needs .018" lash on both sides!

Please take the time to compare it to CC's great old 288AR solid street roller b/c Harold say's it will run right w/ it! I bugged Harold for quite a while, (b/c I won't run a roller lifter cam for fear of when I will eat the needle bearings), to come up w/ a solid lifter cam like the great old CC 288AR and he did for me!!

Call Harold here (662) 562-4933

if you want a SOTA cam and I have to say that you can't go wrong buying a UDHarold cam!!

And if you do call him, please say hello from ol' pdq67 for me.

Harold did the great old CC 268HE and others, his own Ultradyne line and the Lunati VooDoo cams so go..

Btw, let's chat BB heads.....

If the intake ports of the heads are wider than they are tall, they are little-bitty peanut port heads that range from 198 cc's up to a supposed 230.

If taller than wide large oval ports.

We get into a deal here b/c GM's early true closed chambered heads like the -206's and then some newer semi-closed chamber heads like the -215's, and jumping to the -781 or a -049 open chamber heads , all can be/are the best large oval port heads going, (and are generally 255 to maybe 262 cc's), IF you match your compression to them cc chamber-wise AND YOU HAVE TO CC BB HEADS b/c they can vary from 112/113 for squared-off way open, shallow-chambered, smog heads to say -049's that can run from 113 to as big as 120+ cc's...

pdq67

PS., forget the later L-29, peanut port replacement heads, imho!

mine's a 289 casting block. 2 bolt mains. one of the better 454 castings imo. good score. got my core with 049 oval port heads for 250$ back in 1989 or so.

not many "hi perf" heads during the 80's. if you can find some 049's or 781's you'll do well.

Sure, please check Speed-O-Motive and Ohio Crankshaft Co.

Buy what you need unbalanced, mock it up and then have it looked at locally by a good Machinist and then balance it once it's checked good to go.

496, buy at least 1/4" longer rods to help balance her.
