79 Z28 Budget Pro-Touring
MAJOR UPDATES STARTING ON POST #95
hello everyone, my name is Travis and im 18 years old. i bought my car in January 2008 and joined this site shortly after. due to various obstacles i haven't been able to work on my car until now so here it goes.
i bought this 79 Berlinetta with the intention of dropping a 350 in it and fixing the interior up. as yall know things can get out of hand quickly, and after spending 11 months on this site reading threads every day, i have decided to do a frame off restoration. even though this is my first project, i acquired some welding skills in auto tech when i was in high school welding floor pans in my friend's 75 Bronco. i also built the 305 in my truck with my dads help. that was when i was 15, and i know so much more about engines now, mostly because of this site. my progress will be slow but steady as im a college student, but im a perfectionist so rest assred it will be done right. attention to detail is what its all about!
The Plans:
Engine: 350 4 bolt main bored .040 to 357 (engine specs in sig)
Trans: Muncie M20 4 speed
Rear: Eaton posi, 3.73 ratio, 30 spline axles
desktop dyno (LOL) shows 425 HP @ 6500, 440 TQ @ 5000
the car when i got it:

my (father's) shop (ive been cleaning it up to get the car in during winter break)

the BEAST 305 LOL
heres what ive done since sunday:
previous owner was messy (backgorund info: i bought it from a tow yard, guy got a DUI and didnt have the money to get the car out of storage so he said keep it. LOL then i bought it from the tow yard owner)

RUST!

dash out

i hope to get the car in the garage this weekend and yank the motor and tranny and get the subframe off and start sandblasting!

Good start, my floorboards were perfect but I have replaced soooo much sheetmetal. Are you gonna leave it looking like a stock berlinetta? shave the emblems? Add Z28 flares?

Jeezzzzz.... That guy was a complete slob, lol.
Not sure, but you might wanna double-think that M20... with 3.73's your highway cruising RPM's will be a lil on the high side. If you have it already that's one thing, but if you're talking about BUYING one... I'd get something with an overdrive, or something like a richmond bulletproof and 2.73's or so.
Richmond's website has a calculator on it that you can plug your driveline info into and it will give you the RPM's at a certain speed, etc... pretty nice tool.

thanks for the suggestion but i got the trans from my auto tech teacher's friend who let me have it for the price of the clutch i bought for his new M22 plus the labor for me installing it, basically 280 bucks for a perfect M20, at 18 i couldn't pass that up. LOL
i have done calculations, but it comes out to about 2800 at 65, not too bad as i will only take it to the mountains or beach once or twice a year. btw, its not my daily

you and I will have the same kind of color scheme when done. Mine was orig. white z28 with blue stripes. it sure is fun cleaning up after an old drunken slob.....well that's kinda like me ..................LOL never knew you could LIVE in a camaro like he did.Stuff sure does slip through between the seat and the console. In my car I found pristine quarters from 1980 1981 etc etc.Ha Ha

When i was cleaning my 79 t top berlinetta out to get into the truck, because the previous owner wanted to check it and make sure there was nothing of value inside of it since it used to be his girls car and they lost the door/trunk key, we pulled the bottom seat cushion out and found a complete set of keys!! saved the hassle of taking the back seat out. Wonder how they got lost there.... haha.

actually i lied, it'll have black interior. LOL easier to get parts, easier to clean.
C-1 Generation 2 - your car was my inspiration for keeping it white with blue stripes, just so you know.

anyone know how i could go about repacing this? since they don't make full quarters im trying to figure out the best way to do it. it would help a lot if this section wasn't curved either
