how to remove tilt steering assembly?

I've removed the steering wheel, and the assembly directly behind it, (the one the ignition cylinder slides in to), but I can't figure out how to get the assembly behind it off, (the one that the tilt lever comes out of).

I'm trying to remove the piece that surrounds and slides over the steering shaft, and mates with the short round part that comes just an inch or so out from the dash. That is, the part in between the dash and the part that the ignition cylinder goes in to. I hope this is making sense...

Car's a 1978.

Anyway, any help on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

No replies needed on this thread. Going to start a new thread with a different approach.

slick: try searching this site for steering wheel removal. They're not ignoring you just that not everybody is here often enough to answer your questions.

Thanks cardinal. I got the wheel off okay, but then I totally screwed up the rest of the column while trying to replace the ignition cylinder

While looking for a part to replace the ones I messed up it looks like I ought to just replace the whole tilt steering column, so I just started a new thread to figure out how to do that:

Hopefully I'm on the right track!

I believe I understand your questions and since I'm not near my reference materials or an actual column to look at, here's what I recall.

I know there is a special tool that is made to release a set of pins that retain part of the tilt knuckle assembly. The tool is made by Lisle and OTC and looks like a small threaded pin press.

The occurrance of the plastic tilt knuckles wearing out and needing replacement are commong thoughout most of the GM vehicles through the mid 90's that I know of and maybe even to current day. Fortunately, most GM parts departments keep the plastic sphere knuckles on hand for a relatively inexpensive cost.

The problem though is that I think you cannot properly disasemmble that part of the column without the tool to prevent damaging the assembly and be able to put it back together.

Yup, I can attest to that.

So now I'm going to replace the whole column. Oh well...live and learn.
