serp. belt squeel
On my 88 Trans am... Tore it apart to put new head gaskets on 6 months ago and bought a new dayco belt. Thing squeeled since day 1. Belt dressing helps it for 2 seconds then it starts screeching horribly. I'm trying to sell this car and don't wanna spend another $20 on another belt.
anyone know a fix to stop serp. belt squeel?? I know its not any bad bearings or anything. I bought a dayco for my s-10 last week and that sucker squeeks too!!!

Is the belt tensioner near the middle of it's range? There will usually be 2 hash marks on one half of the tensioner housing and 1 hash mark on the other half. The single hash mark should line up somewhere between the two hash marks- that indicates the belt is the right length and the tensioner is putting the right amount of tension on it.
Typically, if you're running the tensioner out of adjustment range (almost fully extended to it's stop) it won't be supplying enough tension and you'll get a constant squealer.
Take a picture of the hash marks and post it up, if you like. I've worked on a lot of 3rd gens- I can tell at a glance if it's right.
I've used Dayco belts and I've used Goodyear. Had problems with neither.

haven't looked at in a while, but if i recall the single line matches up with the 2 lines. I am going off memory though, so i will take a snap at it tomorrow and post up.
It's just strange that both dayco belts i purchased from pepboys squeeled.
I guess what i'll also do is add a little tension to the belt with a 3/8 breaker bar. If the belt is the right size, maybe the spring in the tensioner just weakened up and i need a new tensioner.

That's possible, too. Fortunately, 3rd gens have a little "square" cast into the top of the tensioner that you can put a ratchet drive into directly. It's there to give you an easy way to remove tension so you can get the belt off, but I suppose you could apply more tension there just as easily.

got a pic of it...
Was in a hurry, and the battery was dead, so i didn't get to put any tension on it while running. Will do that tomorrow. My memory served me right, looks like the belt length is just right....
that is a new idler pulley btw

That's about right for a fresh belt. It's on the tight end of it's range. When it stretches from running for a few hours it'll line up on the 2nd hash mark. When it's worn out it'll be below the 3rd one.
So, no help on that one.
Strange.... serp. belts almost never squeal unless they're way past shot or improperly tensioned. I mean, they have a TON of contact with the pulleys they go around.
Let us know how it goes with the "artificial tension" experiment.

Try spraying a little WD-40 on the both sides of the belt when it's running. I've had some wierd belt noise in the past and the WD-40 helped. Ironically, anti-squeal always made it worse.
