1970 Z-28 Battery Cable P/N's

The assy manual shows 8901456 and 8901461 for the positive and negative battery cables respectively. Is this correct? What do some of the survivor cars have on them? Thanks,

Paul

The 1970 Camaro Assembly Manual Lists Parts For The Base Model Of The Camaro With Either A 6 Cylinder Or 307 Engine With 3 Speed Transmission Except When In Sections Of The Assembly Manual For RPO L34 L48 L78 And Z28 And RPO M20-M22 Transmissions to mention a few

The Saginaw 4 Spd Transmission Was The Base Transmisson For Rpo L65 Engine

Automatic Transmissions Are Considered Optional In The 1970 Camaro Assembly Manual

Such Is The Case With The "8901456 HL" Postive Cable And The "8901461 HS" Ground Cable Which Are The Standard Cables For Base Camaro With Out Heavy Duty Battery

The 1970 Z28 Used The RPO R79 H.D. Battery With Optional Heavy Duty Battery Cables

The Cables Are Stamped With The Gm Part Number And Two Letter ID Code In White Ink Used To Identify The Cables For Use On The Assemly Line

The Two Letter ID Codes are listed In Box 50 And 51 On Van Nuys Build Sheets For The Base Cables And The Heavy Duty Cables

H.D. Ground Cable Is Stamped With "8901460 Hr"
H.D. Positive Cable Is Stamped With "8901457 Hm"

Heavy Duty Cables Were Also Used On A/C Cars And Some L65 Camaros With 4 Speed Trans

Hope This Helps

Just another note here. Any Camaro could be ordered with RPO-T60 Heavy Duty Battery, and with that RPO, you got the heavy duty battery cables too.

Are these cables available in reproduction? My original positive cable has the small red wire going to the junction block missing, or broke off at the main terminal. I wonder if it can be fixed? Thanks,

Paul

Paul, Mine are...

+ side 8901457 HM
- side 8901460 HR

Still have my original - side on the car, but had to take the orignal + side off because of the small thread bolt.

You learn something new all of the time here. I ordered my car with a heavy duty battery but never knew the cables were different so when I bought new ones, I just got the standard ones. I'm sure they'll work just fine but assuming the heavier ones are available, I would have gone with those.

Why does it show 71 /72 cables for special high performance but not for 70?
I guess you would order the 71/72 if you need them...
Thanks Frank

Lectriclimited part number 22690 embossed "8901460 HR" negative cable (listed as 307 camaro for some reason) and part number 15025 embossed "8901457 HM".
No special ordering required to get the correct suffix ( HR and HM)

www.lectriclimited.com

Just thought I would pass this along. The bolt heads are not 5/16, they are both 7/16.

As Charley said...

My 1100 mile Z has it's orig cables and bolts and both take 7/16 wrench.
