MYOLD70z

I have been reading all of the posts and I finally decided to try my hand at it. I have had my 1970 Camaro z28, 4 speed since 1988. I drove it for ten years and then stored it in my garage. I decided to restore it before I went on my most recent tour to Afghanistan. I brought it to a local garage and it turned out for the worst, he absolutely chopped the heck out of it, I got it back and took the car home. Then a friend of mine who decided to help me work on it let me have some space in his garage. I have been working on it for the last six months. The vehicle is being rebuilt from the ground up. I brought the car to a shop that stripped it to bare metal and of course we found a lot of rot that was covered up by paint, and bondo from the previous owner. Stripping the car down to just bare bones took some time, but once that was done and all the parts put into boxes the vehicle was brought to a shop to be stripped of all paint and media. Once that was complete the body work was started. The first photos show the vehicle on the frame machine and the new door skins. The one thing we are experiencing with the new body parts is that they do not fit well and adjustments for it to fit are many. The first photos show the begining stages of the project. This is the first time I have posted photos so I hope it works.

Looks like a ton of work ahead of you BUT having a 70 Z, I KNOW it's worth it.

Welcome! Not only do those new body panels fit poorly, they also are much lighter than factory! In hindsight I wish I had just fixed my old panels, rather than buy new.

Ok the vehicle is completley striped and on its way to the shop to get sandblasted. The vehicle came back from the being cleaned up and we found more rot than expected. The rocker panels near the rear quarters were in bad shape and need to be completly cut out and replaced with new metal. The previous owner loaded the rocker panels with tar and that took some work to get out. The subframe has been removed and also sandblasted and completly striped. The photos show the slow progress and the much needed body work. Click image for larger version

When you upload the photos to photobucket, if you hover over the photo a box will pop up beneath it. One of the links in there will be surrounded by [ img][ /img] without the spaces. You copy that and past it in the post and it will show a larger picture.

This photo is the rockerpanel area that is near the rear quarter that was in very bad shape and has to be rebuilt completly. In one of the photos you see Brian, a very experienced body man who is assisting with the work.

The vehicle was returned from the sandblast shop, overall I was satisfied with the final product. The vehicle was painted and then we discussed what we would tackle first. The rocker panel areas and the trunk areas will get the attention first. We cut the rocker panel areas away and we will be replacing it with sheet metal that was purchased from a local shop

Here are some photos of the vehicle prior to the stripping and primer painting. In the dash area there is considerable damage to the corner section which is typical for this year. The photos with also show the rot that is in the rocker panel area and the door panel section that is on the inside of the rear quarter panel that has a been completely rotted away. These sections will be difficult to rebuild due to the multiple bends in the sheet metal. There are some interior shots as well that show the vehicle prior to the stripping and primer painting. I should have posted those first but I just recently located them.

The rear quarters are not too bad to deal with but the rear valance is not fitting at all it will take more to make that one fit.
