Performance Tires for 15" rims?

I know that they are pretty hard to find now a days with the creation of the low profile tire but what is a decent handling tire for 15" rims that won't break my bank? I heard firestone "firehawks" are pretty good? I know a lot of people don't like BFG's because they suck for traction.

The BFG Radial T/A, Dunlop GT Qualifier, Goodyear Eagle and Firestone Firehawk tires are all about the same. The reason nobody makes a truely high performance tire in a 15 inch wheel size is because when pitted against a good low profile tire in a 17 inch wheel size they get spanked all the way to the finish line. Drag tires are a little different because you only have to turn at the big end of the track and the tall sidewall lets you hit the tire harder.

Dunlop, dunlop, dunlop are the only tires.

My current fav's are the Dunlop SP Sport 5000's An all weather Z rated to 165MPH tire. 35-50 PSI range with no deformation. And rain snow or shine they stick like glue. Have had no problems even in deep snow.

BFG n Goodyear suck

Though there are newer version of the 5000 out now but nothing cool in a 15. think they are up to 9000. Id still buy more 5000s if I can.

Check Ebay though, lots of places sell new tires cheap on there. With the same warranty they offer in their store.

I'm pretty happy with my Yokohama Avid H4's in dry conditions 245 60 15 tire size. A little tail happy in wet conditions though. I paid just over 500 bucks for the set of 4.

Got outstanding mileage out of my Cooper Cobra GTs. Decent traction wet or dry. Good price too! I think I'm done with BFG Radial T/As. The last couple of sets I've had sucked.

I went with the Cobra's.....and lemme tell you they are about THE HARDEST tires out there....I mean construction equipment tire tuff.....

They leave a purdy black mark....but I didn't see any special traction out of them.....

Pirelli P600 in 235 60 15; OEM for the early 90's jaguars (XJS & XJ).

They look completely 'un-classic', but the grip is phenomenal particularly dry. They are the highest speed rating and are a nice velvety black color. I've only run them for about 3000 miles so its a bit early to tell treadwear, but they are pretty soft so I am guessing poor.

I have Goodyear Eagle GTII's and they are good. Softer then most tires, they get good and sticky after a burnout. Have about 7k on the front tires and tread is still good. Not a good tire for heavy down pour while driving. Hydro planned 2x almost dying when it was Noah's Ark outside. And they are pretty cheap too.

Edit: They also make them in large sizes for the rear unlike most other companys.

I have them Cooper Cobra's they are a very hard tire. Unfortunantly a heavy right foot and open dif's make for one very worn tire. about 2,700 miles on it and one is about to bite the dust. but besides that little problem, i have been fairly happy with them. they can handle the long fast turns, havn't gone to the real twisties yet. 235's and 295's on 15x8's. they are cheep enough aswell. i believe $90'll getchya a 295.

The only performance tires are the aforementioned Pireili and them more pure race tires, like avons. Look here: http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/sho...hlight=pirelli

Non of that white lettered stuff is a true 'perfomance tire'.

Are you looking for a true competition tire or a good street tire that can do most everything well?? R-comps are available in a 15" and Kumho, Yokohama, Hoosier, Toyo, et al, all offer them. If you're a purist, stick with BFG, Goodrich, Firestone, or something that was available back in the day. The compounds are much better now than when these tires were originally sold in the '70's.

www.tirerack.com has all of the popular tire manufacturers and you can peruse that site to get most of the information you need. Plus, readers offer their thoughts as well.

Good luck,
Mary Pozzi

I'm looking for a set of tires that will have good dry and wet traction (no snow here ) that will perform decently at the track when I do some autocross. Eagle F1's look like the way to go but I can't find the right sizes.

I've got Khumo Ventures in 295/50/15 on the back of my car. They are pretty decent and have survived some hard miles. Only them and BFGs come in that size, I don't like BFGs.

Hard to get a set of BFGs that will balance out and run smooth these days. Poor build I suppose. I recently bought a set of Goodyear Eagle HP, 225 60 16, ride decent, grab pretty good seems like. Kind of expensive though.
