LSX or a AFR headed 406

I am crazy for wanting to use a 6.0l and L92 heads ? . It just seems to easy to make big power with a LSX . My problem is I already bought a set of AFR 195cc Comp ported heads . My goal is 500/500 at the flywheel would like more but that is the minimum . Would I hit my goal with a 406 at 10.5 and smallish cam 296/304 234/242 @ .050 .577 .575 , 112 lsa and 107 center line ?. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnRKCG_Lxn4 this is the cam in a 383. I do not want to go bigger or use a soild roller .This strictly a street car will not see much if any track time .

The other problem is I would have to buy a block for the 406 , was looking at a Dart SHP from Carl . Along with the rest of the internals , minus the cam . I have most of the rest headers , intake , rockers etc...

I have been looking on ebay and have found a few 6.0L for around 1200.00 with accessories and harness . Hell I could buy new from Jake and still end up relatively cheap (compared to finishing the 406) .

Either choice would be EFI and controlled by a FAST XFI/TCI setup , which I already have .

I am really confused on what to do , the LSX is just so tempting. Maybe I should just off load the gen1 stuff . Or maybe build a low buck 383 and hang on until it blows .

Fixed.

No you're not. 300-320cfm out of the box. Better then BBC heads.

...With that cam set up in a new 400 block , you should be making around 540hp or so with about the same in torque , a friend of mine had this similar combo in a 80's monte and went 11.50's with a 700r4 and 4;56 gears, but he had dart heads , hope that helps, DC

IMHO, you will have to do a little more work to get the LS engine installed and running, but it will run better, get better economy, and have more potential. Of course, if you are thinking about a beefier, aftermarket block for the 400 the weight will favor the LS. If you get an aluminum block on the LS it'll even lighten the nose over what the car was stock. AFAIK the aluminum blocked LS engines will do 500hp without any issues, but if you want to add forced induction you should go iron.

Definitely go the LS route. Then you can sell me your AFRs!

LY6 for ~$2000 .......half that cost is the L92 heads new.

Start adding it up. Fuel pump, wiring harness mods, ecm flash,
I think my next one I'm going to do the ECM flash myself as well as the wiring
mods to save $800 but I'll have to spend $500 on HPTuners.

I'm not sure if I want the L92 engine over the LY6 just yet......
The internals are slightly better, have to ask Jake.

Either choice will be EFI . I have a FAST XFI box sitting on the shelf along with the Spectra EFI conversion tank. That saves me a few bucks on the harness and HP/EFI Live software . I bought the box on ebay for less than 900.00 with harness and wide band . This thread on LS1tech is not helping matters . Granted it far from a budget build . It looks like using head that compares CFM/CC wise and a cam with similar specs the LSX should out power a Gen 1 by 40 or 50HP , maybe more . http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/genera...r-215-r-d.html http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/genera...et-update.html

I was just kinda hoping that I might be on somewhat equal ground with good heads on a 406 .

I have a set of AFR Eliminator 195 comps (300cfm out of the box). I had a Procharger F1C putting 25lbs thru them... Great heads. They will get you the power you want and a ton of torque on a 406 SBC. Personally I think the Gen 1 SBC suits the classic Camaros as they age. Just have a look at the 406 set ups on AFR's combo page.....

Just to give you an idea AFR 235's on a 427 gave 759hp...

or this 383 with steel heads and 489hp...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eip7F...eature=related

195's (2.02 valve) normally are high torque heads on a 406 but you have the 195 comps (2.08 valve) which outflows the AFR 210 Race ready.....

Going backwards in technology with LS motors isn't cheap either. Going with the intake, and control module is almost $700.

That's NOT including the carb either......so figure close to $1000 to go backwards in technology.
Of course, you can sell the FI stuff.....and supplement....

For me , I'd rather spend the $1000 on the fuel pump, and HP tuners and you've got a better performing engine.
EVEN IF you outsource it all, you're looking at ~$275 for the fuel pump, ~$400 for the ECM flash, ~$350 for the wire mods.

In the end, just depends on what you want to do with your car.....
