From what I know, the older fat ps3, 60/80gig ones I think and they way you could tell by looking at it was it had four usb slots up front, instead of two.
I have seen on the ps3 network they have a download patch that you can play the ps1 games. I haven't tried it because I don't have many ps1 games anymore that I have not re-bought in a diffrent format my tomb riaders all PC now.
I also have that one game that was kick ass tenchu or something like that. Looked great on the ps1 but probably not so great looking now.
Look into an emulator called bleem. it allows you to play ps games on the PC.
I had it back in the day and it worked for the games I had, by now they must be better.
