Sanding before sending to paint shop
So I'm getting a paintjob soon. At the moment it's white. Fading in some spots. (changing to black with silver stripes) I got an estimate for $2650 by a local paint shop. The guy has a good reputation with classics & muscle cars so he's trustworthy. But money is tight & i was thinking that i can do half the work by sanding the car down, and save some money.
But what i came here to ask is how does sanding with the urethane bumper work? Do i sand it at all? or can it get painted over with no problem??

You still have to wet sand it, or the paint will flake off. I recommend hand sanding it if you havent done much body work. Ask the guy if he is gonna prime the car, if he is sand it with 180-220, if he is not priming, then sand it with 600 wet.
I would ask the guy if its ok to sand it yourself first, cause sometimes if a person doesn't know what they are doing, you can make more work for him.

What ever you do decide, clean it very good first. Soap water, grease/wax remover
Bedfore you get any sandpaper near it.$2650.00 is a cheap price as it is. Are you keeping it the same color? I f he has a good rep. Just remove all the trim etc. and let him do it corretly!

I agree - most good bodymen know the average car owner doesn't know diddly and would not want you to do any of the work yourself to "help him out".

That is a good price! Clean it well as stated above.then sand with 600 wet if appling directly over factory paint. If primer will be apllied, you can go with a courser grit, or even a red scotchbrite. Just make sure you sand it well and remove all the shine. Good luck!

For the price he quoted you I would let him do all the work so you don't screw something up and then have to pay more because the car has to be blocked sanded by a pro.
I could get a good repaint for less the $6000.00 around me without body work.

thanks guys. yea that'll be the price with him doing all the work. it really is a steal for the work that's being done ; changing the color and the stripes.
this guy mainly works on muscle cars & hot rods so that's the shop i'm set on yanno. guess i should leave it to the pros haha
i'm stopping by tomorrow to ask what exactly he had planned for the urethane bumper.
thanks again fella's

I would check to see if he will paint it and fix any spots you may miss in your prep work
