Or, meds might not be in order. If high cholesterol is your ONLY risk factor for heart disease, there's an increasing opinion that a lifetime of statins might cause more problems than it fixes.

Ever heard of Red Yeast Rice ??

One way the drug companies have been coping is to repackage and rebrand health food supplements. Drugs like Lovaza, which is nothing more than the fish oil you can get in health food stores, and lovastatin which has been in use for roughly a thousand years (800 AD) in the form of red yeast rice. In the case of lovastatin, the FDA banned the supplements because they are "identical to a drug and, thus, subject to regulation as a drug." That is very convenient for the drug company, which now charges monopoly rents on the product -- which can increase prices at ridiculous levels.

Quote:
In the late 1970s, researchers in the United States and Japan were isolating lovastatin from Aspergillus and monacolins from Monascus, respectively, the latter being the same fungus used to make red yeast rice but cultured under carefully controlled conditions. Chemical analysis soon showed that lovastatin and monacolin K are identical.

In 2007, the FDA sent Warning Letters to two dietary supplement companies. One was making a monacolin content claim about its RYR product and the other was not, but the FDA noted that both products contained monacolins. Both products were withdrawn.[9][10] The FDA also issued a warning press release (see Further Reading; FDA 2007). The crux of the release was that consumers should "…not buy or eat red yeast rice products…may contain an unauthorized drug that could be harmful to health." The rationale for "…harmful to health…" was that consumers might not understand that the dangers of monacolin-containing red yeast rice might be the same as those of prescription statin drugs.

In other words, a drug company patented it 40 years ago and whined, so now the FDA has basically banned all natural supplemental versions of it because there's less money in it for them. Now it's a controlled substance they can assrape you on the fee's.

Keep in mind, the "real deal" red yeast rice with statin content, if you can even get it, can cause the same long term effects as the pharma-statins.

My girl friends dad is in his late 60's. He has had high cholesterol for years, but the scans of his arteries show no build up. So, he just keeps eating the same way, and goes on with life.

That's a very odd condition.

High Cholesterol (HDL) typically leads to plaque buildup in the arteries and
restricted blood flow leading to other health problems. Heart disease, etc.

HDL is actually the "good cholesterol." LDL is the bad cholesterol, and you want to try and keep that number down.

I watched it. I think I'll move to "Completely Dead" before I'll spend two months drinking blended lawn clippings.

Anyone ever contemplate that the stress from worrying about your health all the time is cutting years off your life?

eh.....depends on how you perceive that statement.
Not worrying or ignoring bad health indicators can lead to more problems alot quicker.

Some people educate themselves beyond what we hardly learned in school on how to properly eat.
That's not alot of effort, some would call it a hobby of sorts. Kinda like exercising.....not everyone does it.

With the benefit being.....longevity and happiness. Ya gotta admit, at least I didn't learn crap in school
in regards to carbs, cholesterol, diabetes, sugars, HFCS, calorie intake counting, etc.

Some people are just blessed with better genes then others and never have to worry.
Others......not so much, have to learn ALOT faster .....or get obese alot faster with health problems.

Education is indeed very important. When I played hockey with travel teams, the bus would stop at McDs, we'd run in, eat a bunch of bad food, buy more to bring on the bus and off we'd go. Back then, you never knew this food (?) was bad for you. Unfortunately, my diet stayed the same for years until I became educated on the differences of good vs bad food. I do each much better now. My cholesterol is now 175...not the best, but much better then it was.

Another thought that just occurred to me to respond to Todd's question....

Women watch what they eat and do this all the time. (those that care)
Women live longer then men typically.
