First things first..... You need an IMACA 609 certificate in order to purchase R12.
(Correction.... MACS now issues the certification. IMACA no longer does this.)

Click Here ----> http://www.macsw.org/AM/Template.cfm...on=Section_609

If you can't buy refrigerant... Your A/C repair knowledge is almost worthless.

auto zone or even wallymart will sell you r 134 with nothing as far as a license. and with the amount of cars left that use r 12 chances are slim that you'll ever need to buy it. so if you want to teach yourself car air conditioning systems I'm sure that there are some web sites that can help. remember google is your Friend! cars are pretty simple systems but usually have leak problems as they use rubber hoses as opposed to hard connections as in 99 percent of all other systems. as far as the EPA test all you have to pass the a 25 question "core" with basic knowledge questions and part 2 which is split systems(which is used in autos). part 1 is small appliances. part 3 is commercial chillers. i have universal certification which is when you pass all 3 parts and the core. what ever certification you want you MUST PASS THE CORE SECTION.

You'll need training and equipment.
You will need a Recover/Recycling machine for R12 and one for R134a.
You'll need a Refrigerant TYPE detector as some A-holes will use butane, freeze 12 or other improper stuff in Mobile AC. Add a few ounces of the mix stuff to a 30lb tank of recovered and cleaned R12, or R134a and its JUNK!
You'll need a Quality gauge set for each Freon
A Vacuum pump for each freon
A Charging Cylinder (or one combined with the Recovery/Recycler) for each freon
Flush gun kit
Electronic leak detector
Dye leak detector kit and Hi-Power UV light.
Access to Wiring diagrams, Mitchel on Demand etc.
And a few specialized hand tools like Beadlock Crimper, Spring lock separator, and several things I'm over looking right now.

You can just not service cars older than 1994 to excuse yourself from R12 duties.

You'll have THOUSANDS of dollars tied up in this equipment.
And that is to service BASIC AC systems,, start working on Newer cars with electronic Controls and diagnostics on them,,,,just more headaches...and tools.
