Fuel Gauge Help

The gauge suddenly went about a quarter past the full position to the right and stayed. I changed out with another gauge and the second one did the same thing. The fuses are fine and I know I have about half a tank of gas. Help - please

Check the ground wire that comes off the tank. Should be a tan wire that grounds to the end (tail) panel.

The gauge showing past full indicates an open circuit somewhere between the input to the gauge and the ground wire to the sender. The ground wire supplies a ground potential through the resistive sending unit in the tank. The other side of the sending unit goes to the gauge. Any break or open in that circuit will make the gauge read past full.

You guys are great thanks. I dropped the gas tank, re-secured all the wiring and low and behold the gauge started working again! Thanks again. Then I noticed the sway bar arm that was broken. Oh well that I know how to fix.
