judgement call- dash pad overlay vs replacement

i have to take off my dash pad to do some electrical work eventually, so i wanted to get some solid opinions based on experience regarding whether i should get a dash pad cap/overlay or just get a whole new dash pad. my current dash pad is in overall good shape; almost no warping, could always be repainted to take care of fading. the only real problem are some glaringly obvious tears (if i try stuffing them back into place, they eventually fall back out) along both sides of the steering column-

would an overlay be enough to correct this problem or am i gonna have to shell out $300+ for a new dash?

Replacement or Just Dashes

I've done this job twice on my 1970 and I used a replacement dash each time. One note on the replacements though. The plastic they use seems to be more brittle than the plastic on the OE GM dash pads, so you'll need to be careful when attaching the side vents to the new pad.

The absolute best result would be to use Just Dashes. Their work is amazing, but again, not cheap. I have not used them, but they seem to use the highest quality materials, and are the least likely to warp.

My nickel.
