Question about buying a car out of state.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, couldn't find an appropriate place to put it. I'm in NY and just bought a car in Indiana. My plan is to fly over and drive it back, make a road trip out of it. However, in Indiana they must surrender the plates immediately after the title is signed - so I wouldn't have any plates on the way home. Is it possible for the Indiana DMV to give a temp. registration to an out of state buyer, or does NY give out pre-registrations just so I can drive it home? I know this must have been done before, I just can't figure out how!

Aaron

Call the DMV's to find out what the rules are for each state (NY: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/call.htm ) (Indiana and you need to know which city the vehicle is located near: http://www.in.gov/bmv/3009.htm ). I would ASSUME that before NY would issue a temporary tag (IF such a thing exists) they would require you to have insurance on the vehicle.

You should be able to get a temp tag in Indiana just make sure you have proof of insurance with you when you go. Your current ins card should be enough.

Thanks guys! I just called the BMV in Indiana and they told me that if I bring proof of insurance and the signed bill of sale, they'll give me a temporary pass so I can drive it back to NY and register it there. You guys were right on.

I know I called DMV about one in AR once and was told as long as I had the title, bill of sale, proof I had ins. etc. it was ok to drive it home without a tag because "how else are you going to get it there?" she said.
