Gear Indicator

My gear indicator centered between my speedometer and fuel gauge in the dash is wayy off.. When the car is in low (1st) all the way back, (TH350 transmission) the indicator shows it is in Drive, when in Drive, the indicator shows Reverse.. Anyone know why this is?.. A bent arm? a bad cable? Help?
