.
I drilled mine deeper & used a heli-coil. If it still starts a 1200 HP monster, it should hold yours.
If that doesn't work, it can be welded, but when I did my search, everyone said it needs to be disassembled before welding??

From NAPA and other places, the H/C kit that is.
Why are you running a Tri-5 starter?? This is ancient is all. Know all about this stuff tho...
I like the Tri-5's/348/409's open bottomed bellhousings b/c I can change a clutch in like 45 minutes!

I'm not as old as dirt, like PDQ, and I've never dealt with that stuff.
I drilled about 3/4" past the crack. I keep all the standard helicoils on the shelf.
I usually get them from farm & fleet, and buy refill's whenever they're on sale.

+1 for installing a Helicoil
As for the heat soak problem = hard starting. Get a new mini starter off of Ebay. They cost well under $100 and are the best investment you'll ever make in a starter. Also put a heat shield in along with the mini starter.

Heli-coils work very well.... I've used them in both aluminum and iron castings.
There is a proper sized drill and tap required for heli-coil repairs.
Get the kit (not just the heli-coils) and you will have everything you need for the job.
Good Luck!

There is a bracket that goes on the front of the starter and attaches to the block. It's usually called a starter brace. These are mandatory with the Danchuk adapter. Probably all you need to fix the grinding problem. They can be found cheap at any junkyard.

Not sure what a uhx block is but anything from 1981 is probably old enough. Some of the newer ones had knock sensors, mini starters, etc. and might be different.
Part number 354353 should work.

This pic is a big block, but the setup is about the same. The SB bracket is longer and the attachment on the engine block is higher. One of the bolts on the starter is special. It has threads on both sides on the bolt head. The brace attaches to that bolt.
