Your Dad's Chevelle must have very tall tires or an OD unit.

With a final drive ratio of 1:1, 3.73:1 rear gears and a 33" tire one would hit 2848 RPMs. On a more "traditional" 26" tire with the same gearing as above one would see 3615 RPM's

My nephew had a very wild 427 BBC and 3.73's in a '69 Camaro....That car would have been brutal on the highway if it weren't for the Tremec 5 speed...we were well under 3K RPM at ~70 MPH
