Moroso Trick Springs
Im not sure if I posted about this or not. But im running the moroso trick coil springs in the front of my 74. I got the lightest spring rate they listed 212 lbs/in part number 47180. So after installing the drivetrain I set it down on the ground and it sits sky high, right up on the factory bump stops in fact. So I pulled them out and cut one coil, and again, it still sits on the upper stops. So I figured maybe it needs to settle, so I left it on the ground, and bounced it up and down good, and still to this day it sits way too high. So I dont understand, its not like this car is a fatherwieght, it's all steel (minus hood and bumper), has an iron head big block, and im running the lowest rate.
So now I dont know whether to just run it as is, or go to a different front spring. The only thing that might help is when I get in the car it does compress the springs slightly, but not what I was after. I want the front to droop, with lots of lift. Does anyone know of a lighter spring that fits the 2nd gen camaro's? Could I have mine in upside down or something? It just seems it should at least have some droop to create more lift. With no shocks in it, I can easily bounce the front end off the ground, but these springs don't leave much for tuning the front end lift. Any advice? Do I dare cut another coil off?
Thanks
Derek

I don't think that is the correct part number for a 2nd gen

According to Moroso's application chart they are..
1970-81
Big Block Chevy*
1840 - 1910
212 lbs./in.
47180
Did I get the wrong ones?

I have the same part # in my car(aluminum headed sbc, very lightened frontend), total weight of my car is 3200lbs(no driver). I ended up cutting out 2 full coils & it rides just a touch low.
I'd suggest taking a 1/2 coil & trying that.

A 10 second street car, eh!
SBC 409, through the mufflers, on DOT radials, you know, like a street car should be.

I thought that was a Chevy II number but just going off memory. Something is certainly not correct about a 200 lb spring that A) holds the A Arm to the top bump stop and/or B) you have to cut two coils out of it.
A 200 lb coil should sink the front end to it's knees with a big block.

I have them in my slow car. I let them settle for a few days with all the weight I could pile on the front end. Don't remember how much we cut, but we had to trim it 2-3 times before it was the way I wanted. Leaving as much weight on it over night each time. Go slow, and be patient. Everyone I ever talked to had to trim those springs, they must make them long. It's not just you.

I bought for my sbc the 40175 full weight front end. The number was also listed years ago as a bbc pro which is fiberglass hood battery located to back in other words " racer has taken advantage of weight saving and relocation" this should bring the ride height back to stock. But before you cut anything you want those springs to settle, and I hope when they do it will not require anycutting seeing that it should settle below stock height.

Ok so it is pretty common. I was starting to wonder if I forgot the crankshaft or something in the engine lol. Another question, do you guys notice the springs make alot of noise on compression? I can bounce the front end, and the springs make a clunk sound as the suspension travels, this is what made me feel I had put the springs in wrong. I put the cut coil on the top (into the spring pocket in the frame) and the flat end in the spring cup in the lower control arm, just as the stock springs came out. Im trying to make the front rise smoothly and quickly as possible. I will try the weight idea on the front end, im just worried with the front end up like it is I wont get a good weight transfer and consistency will go out the window.

Moroso's spring chart is kind of confusing to me. They list 3 numbers for the 70-81 Camaro.
47175 for small block 230 rate
47180 for big block 212 rate
47170 for big block 270 rate
Why is the small block spring stiffer than the big block spring? Seems odd.

Make sure you have them seated correcty in the top. I had alot of trouble getting mine up in the "fingers" right. You also want the cut end on the bottom. the flat side will go up. There is also an indention in the lower control arm where the end of the coil should sit down in it.

I think it goes by weight, so there is 2 BBC springs because they know guys have glass noses/hoods, aluminum heads, move battery, strip down to nothing ect ect. As said, there is a trick to get them to seat correctly, make sure you are in the groove.

Ok well I bet I have them in upside down lol Just my luck. Well I wont be able to swap them until after my move possibly. Grr! When I got this car it was tore apart and abandon so its no surprise someone already flipped the springs, since it was evident they chopped the stock springs with a torch. Thanks for the info guys.
Hey nice car wilson!

I finaly weighed my 74, and it tips the scales at 3,060 pounds with all the steel front, and glass front bumper (and various junk in the car) so I think I will make my goal of under 3,000 with a glass hood and aluminum heads easy! Just goes to show all the factory fluff really adds up in these cars, that about 700 pounds less than the factory weight, and I hav'nt cut anything off the car, just removed interior, front fender wells, and all the other 'stuff'. That's with a full cage and Iron head big block. Im very pleased as this is only 200# heavier than my 63 Nova with a small block in it, Now I cant wait to hit the track!
