and while were on the subject.....
The subject of QUICK small blocks that are off the jackstands and AT THE TRACK that is,,,,
My buddy Dana with the little n/a budget 170cc E-tec 406, hydraulic cam, 74 Nova, Jeggie 3500 street convertor, footbraking a TH350, factory 10bolt with posi and Hoosier 9" slicks... ripped off an 11.22 yesterday
I finally convinced Dana's wife the stock axles and c-clips are now a serious safety issue and HAVE TO GO. So the Moser axles and spool are on their way. (little does she know it's all just in prep for a transbrake and looking for a lousy 0.22 seconds )
I never dreamed this little motor would have the huevos to put this much car at the bottom of the 11's (thanks to a little tunning / tweeking help from Patrick and some GREAT air and a TIGHT track yesterday). I assured Dana the little 400 motor would put his car into the 11's. At the time he didn't have a roll bar and I sure wasn't worried (LMAO) Boy did I miss that one!!!!

There are some of us in rather more northern climates who don't really get an option to drag race this time of year. Jack stand season is part of the deal, like it or not. At least we get to stay close to the fire even if we can't run. On the positive side the car is so well inspected and looked after and every little detail gets reviewed 3-4 times every winter. I didn't have a distributor ( MSD or otherwise ) failure this year. As a mtter of fact I didn't have ANY failures this year. A seat belt buckle broke. That was it. You can't inspect electrics in depth but you sure can give everything the twice over!
I'm getting mine the extra half second it needs to run 11's naturally aspirated at 3300 feet, while its on the stands. I'm actually making the manifold swap today and It'll be runable in a week.
Small blocks rule because they are too easy and too inexpensive to have a ton of fun with! Your pals Nova doesn't suprise me one bit. A friend of ours up here runs 11.7 at our altitude with a 74 Nova and an everyday hot rod 406 and it couldn't be simpler or cheaper and being a Nova, lighter!

Yeah, yeah, yeah,, cry me the blues about the iced over tracks, jackstand season, snowmobile racing, bla bla bla,,, This is the ONLY time of year I get to gloat about ANYTHING weather related,, so show some tolerance will ya!! ( )
You want to trade a little ice for 118° for 4 to 5 frigging months????? A track that is 1240 feet elevation,, and density altitude over 4500' at friggin MIDNIGHT!!!! We can't even crawl out from under our rocks till the sun goes down!

Rick, it IS sic,,, I'm still astounded what this motor is doing, and it is still running the RPM Vortec airGap. Dana is ET hungry now. He's wanting to stuff a solid cam in it, transbrake,,, and is looking at the car with holesaw in hand (he only weighs about 125 so HE can't afford to loose any weight...... )
Toomanyhobbies (Jerry) has offered to let Dana borrow the SuperVic Vortec and that is a change that is yet to come. I made Dana promise he was going to do the aftermarket axle / C-clip thing before he goes ANY farther. Our first team race is mid January, so I suspect there will be some thrashing to test with the spool and then slap the Vic intake on sometime in the next 2 weeks.

We spend 4-5 months during the summer hoping to hit 4500 DA, 5000-5500 is not unusual & yes that's at midnight.
Personally, I'd trade all our ice for your heat, I'm one of those people who hate the cold. Makes you wonder what the hell I'm doing living here?

A 10 second street car, eh!
SBC 409, through the mufflers, on DOT radials, you know, like a street car should be.

Thats what is killing me Carm. It's a 74,, maybe not a Monte Carlo, but not a 'small' car like these little shoeboxes,, it surely IS a budget racer extroardinair. STOCK rear suspension with STOCK 10bolt and posi..... a pair of CE no hop bars, and I gave Dana front and rear CE shocks for his birthday last month because up until then he was running PeP Boys $19 gas shocks!!! No mini tubs, no nothing but a pair of Hoosier 9" x 26" slicks and the front sway bar removed. No tricks to that suspension and that's for sure! Motor is a 509 casting that I had,, one hole wouldn't clean up so it was sleeved and all bored to +.040. A stock GM cast 400 crank, a set of Scat 5.7 rods and "D" dished KB Hiper-U-crackedit pistons for streetable pump gas compression. UNTOUCHED Eddy 170cc Vortec heads, Lunati #0012 hydraulic cam, Crane roller rockers, the Vortec RPM airgap intake, Prosystems carb, and a pair of small 1-5/8" headers and circle track mufflers. The rear is 4.10 gears, trans is a Hughes street TH350 (full automatic trans),,, and get this, he's been pushing this thing through a $225 Jeggs "street" converter. He can't get but 2000-2200 before it pushes past the footbrake for launch. Dana get's a BIOG attaboy for being persistant enough to find exactly what the motor wants. He's been playing with the shift, it seems to REALLY like a 5800 one-two shift and a 5900 shift into 3rd. He's crossing at 6100ish+ at 116mph.
I tell ya, this thing is simply amazing.

Marv - sounds alot like my car....but hes got better heads and a bigger cam. Now I really wish I was in AZ. That would be a fun car to chase at the track.
Has he ever tried short shifting it from first to second? Say around 5500.... See if he would give it a try. It worked for me. Seems that using the TQ that the 400 has got "earlier" in the run more than made up for the short shift.
BUT - that could also be because Im running double humps and a small cam. Just the same - might be worth trying in a test and tune day.
