'79 Z28 Project

Hello everyone!
Like a lot of other people on here, I have looked and read a ton of stuff on here and have seen a hell of a lot of beautiful cars! It's hard to believe that there are soo many second generation fans out there! I want to thank everone for all the advice and knowledge that is provided on this website. I have learned a great deal in a small amout of time! Ok, so I bought a 79 Z28 in 96 from a guy in Virginia for 1,200. The car was in decent shape but the paint was faded and need ed to be redone. So after driving it for a few years, i decided to get rid of the old faded black paint. I stered sanding and I find that the car was originally silver, and was white and then blue before someone finally painted it black! So needless to say, itook the entire body down to the original metal. except for a patch in front of the drivers side rear wheel, that I put in after I sanded it, the body is totally original! Anyway, I get the car painted and decide I wanted to do some work on the motor (was a stock 350) So one thing led to another and I guess I will let the pics tell the rest of the story!! Thanks again for all the help, and please keep the help and advice coming!!

Nice looking project man. I hear ya on that laying on the back part. I was so tired of that after cleaning and painting the under side. Looks like you are making good progress.

Hey Pat, I have been watching your thread for a while! You have done a TON of work to that car!! Looks like it's going to be sweet when it's done! I may get snowed in tonight so I will have lots of time to get some done on mine this weekend!

Your really serious about your car, i can tell, you should have a real head turner one day.
Keep us up to date on your ride!

OK, so I finally dug my way home and into the garage, cut out a couple of bad spots in the front floor boards and am getting ready to fabricate a couple of patches. Now on the passenger rear floor board there was some surface rust and a hole which I cut out, the rest of it is kind of boerder line. Should I go ahead and replace the rear floor board or POR and pray?

passenger side front

passenger side rear, this is the one I'm questioning??

drivers side front

The rest of the floor looks to be in great shape

looks great, keep pics coming, what are you going to use to paint the undercarrige with :?

conrracing 02-12-2010 09:48:42 AM

I am going to use POR-15, I have a whole stock pile of it, I hope this stuff is as good as it claims to be!

Got a little it done yesterday, got a small patch welded into the passenger side floor board, got my heater core that I was waiting for and I got the rest of the fire wall ready to paint. My first attempt at this type of repair!

conrracing,

Real nice job on the underneath of the body and the firewall! What did you use to strip the paint/ crud off to achieve such a nice finish?

John

Hey John,

Thanks for the comments! I used wire wheels, lots and lots of wire wheels! lol They actually work pretty good on most of the crap, but this car was undercoated and that stuff was a pain. Glad I am done with most of it!

Well, the vacation is over :( Sure was nice to get away from the cold and snow for a while! But all good trips to Maui must come to an end! So I have been getting some work done on the car, got a couple of more patches done and I just need to get the drivers side floor board welded up and ground down and painted.

the 80 degree weather was awesome!

Hopefully I will finish up the welding and grinding tonight and have more pics for tomorrow!
