The syncronizer enables the ignition and fuel injection system to distinguish between the exhaust and compression stroke. This is only nescesary for sequential fuel injection and/or coil per plug ignition. Note the half moon shaped shaft at the top of the syncronizer. As this rotates, it will be sensed by the hall effect sensor, visible as the black part bolted to the side of the syncronizer. My brother Brian designed the housing, and sensor mount, specified the bearings and bushing. I machined every part but the bronze gear.
