These are pictures of our 496 Big Block Chevy buildup. The crankshaft is fitted with a toothed wheel for injection and ignition timing. Sensor is mounted using a tall aluminum spacer, as this may not be clear in the photo.
Note the scribed lines to accurately indicate Top Dead Center (TDC). This was done by measuring the position of the piston in cylinder #1. As the piston neared TDC by rotating the crankshaft clockwise a mark was made on the welded tab that lines up with the harmonic balancer's TDC mark. The crankshaft was turned counter-clockwise to bring the piston to the very same distance (as measured using a dial indicator between the block deck and the top of the piston) from TDC in the previous step, and a new mark was made on the tab. Since true TDC is equidistant between the these two marks, we scribed it using calipers or a steel rule. |
