Doing some cleaning up on my engine this week and noticed two things that seemed odd. Two out of three hoses coming off the charcoal cannister were just run over the inner fender well and hanging there. I don't remember doing this and think that it was that way when I got it.

The larger of the two had a T connector on it with a short hose at the end and a PCV valve attached to it. From my manual it looked like it should be connected in with the PCV valve on the valve cover and then to the carb which is what I did.

The bigger mystery here is that there is a skinny hose hanging off the charcoal cannister that appears to go to the carb but I am not sure where. The carb is a 1969 Q-Jet. On the passenger side near the choke there is a spot for a hose of this size but whoever had the car before me plugged the hole with a sealed off piece of short hose. I left it this way. There is a place on the front drivers side of the carb that looks like a hollow metal post will fit.

Is this where the cannister hose goes?

Was I right in hooking up the larger hose in with the existing PCV valve in the valve cover?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the link. I checked it out but still could not tell what to do with the smaller hose. It is skinny like a vacuum hose. Does the cannister need vacuum to operate properly? That may explain a lot.

Great link Bonzo!!! :D

I've never known for sure if all of that spaghetti under my hood is routed correctly. I've got 78 emissions components in an 80 so it will still take some work to figure out what is there and what isn't.

The vacuum is used to purge the canister of gas fumes which were absorbed by the charcoal while sitting. IIRC, It usually is contolled by a temp switch so that the purge happens at temp rather than messing up the air/fuel mixture on cold starts.
