night rider 01-07-2005, 11:10:00 PM Most of the time a well designed and built full exhaust system will out perform cut outs.
By a well designed sysyem I mean, mandrel bent pipes, X pipe up close to the coll., good flowing mufflers, etc
Cut outs will be faster than stock exhaust, and some run of the mill "performance" exhaust systems.
Now dropping your exhaust and running open headers could gain you a few .00X's be the amount of weight you saved by taking the exhaust off..
Open headers/cuts outs most of the times will make a few HP more in the upper most part of the RPM band, at the cost of a larger amount of torque in the lower and mid parts of the power curve
rustbucket79 01-08-2005, 12:10:00 AM Did the comparison between exhaust system on and off down in Mission. Weighed the car both ways, 3550 with me exhaust installed, 3490 exhaust off.
Car went 11.12 best with exhaust on, 10.996 with it off. 3 inch duals, Flowmaster h pipe kit, 3 chamber 3" flomaster mufflers. If you go by the old theory that a 100 pounds is worth a tenth, the car ran (by power increase alone) about 5 hundredths quicker. Build a good exhaust system, you won't need cutouts unless you like the sound of open headers.

JUST KIDDING!!!
Mwilson 01-08-2005, 12:44:00 PM Now i can ditch the loud flowmasters for some stock type and hear the radio
craggar 01-08-2005, 12:49:00 PM I've done like Doug with and without the 3" mandrel bent with super turbos have gained between .15-.2
ZS10 01-09-2005, 02:45:00 PM I've got cut outs on my S10, couldn't hear my own engine at the strip.
On my Camaro I used 3" Warlock mufflers that have removable caps, sounds so nasty I don't care if its any faster.
I did open/closed runs with both and never found any consistant difference, but your car probably go down to 7 flat. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

Mwilson 01-09-2005, 03:15:00 PM Round here everyone with cutouts runs 7 flat

14.22 on the brakes (I expect 13.90's soon)
pdq67 01-10-2005, 12:14:00 AM I installed 2" x 6" long pipe nipples and caps on my First Gen car way back when where the exhaust pipes curved into the driveshaft! They did open her up a schosh TOO!
BUT boy were they noisy right under my front seats!! Say at about 5000/5500rpm in forth gear late at night on the highway by myself way back in '67 going between country towns..
But figure it like this, "my rifle always shot farther, the harder I pulled the trigger!!"
He, He!!

Hpd49 01-15-2005, 11:31:00 AM I had the electrics on my 69 convertible w/ bbc. Not to sure how much HP I gained, but it was awesome pulling up to a light next to one of those little fast & furious things, opening the dumps and watching thier expressions!
rerod355 01-16-2005, 03:57:00 AM I've got some electronic cut-outs on mine as well. On a chassis dyno I picked up 21 rwhp. But the cutouts are 3" while the rest of the full exhaust is only 2.5".
I've also run at the track with them but I'm such an inconsistent/inexperienced driver that no difference was noticed.
