View Full Version : BBC gurus, cam ??'s
lorent Z/28 09-08-2007, 04:43:02 PM My combo right now is a 468, flattop's, stock 781 heads, my current cam is a lunati bracket master II 304/324 dur. .500/.510 lift.
Would It be better to switch to one of the voodoo camshafts? I've been looking at the 60203 268/276 dur, .542/.554 lift.
Would this be an improvment? Car feels very weak now.
Lunati web site says both cams use the same valve springs, or would it be better to use new ones with new cam?
This is the first big block i've had, and right now I'm kinda embarrased to say its a big block..
Thanks Guy's
nuhmizer 09-08-2007, 04:47:36 PM I am not a guru, but I have an Edelbrock .560 lift cam in a 454 I'm assembling and now I'm struggling to pick the right valve springs. I don't know how important more lift is to ya but you may have to change valve springs if you get a cam that has a big lift like that.

Well if you are not lazy [no insult meant] and do not mind setting solid lofters
then a 282S comp cams is the ticket .565 lift 236 duration at .050 and it makes some good power. My 68 bird ran 11.90s@113mph with the same motor except that I used closed chamberd heads and a 11 tci convt. The cam you have now looks to have too much duration so look for something in the 280 to 290 range plus stay with 1 3/4 primary tubes with your combo my car picked up 2 solid thenths with that change alone. Never going to use big tube headders on the street again[see headders by ed as he explains it well]
I have also tried some crane hmv cams they are also good but donot make the power that the comp cams made. So it depends on if you want ease of maintinance or you don't mind getting you hands dirty. Hope this helps:)

Cam cards on the Lunati web site has the same part # for valve springs on both cams listed above. I'm hoping i don't have to change them.

I don't mind working on my car, or getting dirty (I kinda like it), I've been mainly looking at hyd. cams cause its mostly a street car, I've always heard people say solid lift cams were better for racing, but I'm open to anything. I just want a good, stout running, dependable engine.
I'm also trying to buy a set of the 215 heads from a friend of mine, hopeing that might help some too.
jakeshoe 09-08-2007, 08:01:05 PM The 215 heads will wake it up more than a cam swap now.
You have about 7.8-1 compression right now so until you get that up to at least 9-1 putting any bigger cam in it may actually hurt it.
I've built an 8-1 461 using a 282/292 Magnum split duration cam on 108 LSa and it ran like a banshee but it was a bit lazy at sub-2000 rpm, but pulled very hard until over 6K rpm, but I didn't intend to build it that way nor would I recommend it usually.

That is an engine crying out for a blower.

Thanks for the info.. A friend of mine has a fresh set on his engine he said he might sell. Keep trying to talk him into it.
I guess what I really wanted to know was is this big duration bracket master cam what could be hurting my performance with my lo compression setup.

O'yea, I dream of pro chargers all the time.
