I have been looking at weights for potential engine combinations and I am having a hard time getting straight facts.

LS1 fully dressed:
Auto. - 457.6 lbs
Manual - 497.2 lbs

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/z06/ls1ls6.html

From the 2nd gen db:
SBC, Al intake, iron heads(dry, no accessories or exhaust, 350) 440lbs

BBC, Al intake, iron heads(dry, no accessories or exhaust, 454) 580lbs

BBC, Al intake, Al heads(dry, no accessories or exhaust, 454, 4-bolt) 517lbs

SBC, Al intake, Al heads(dry, no accessories or exhaust, 350) Guessing 390lbs (Al heads are 24 lbs each instead of 49lbs)

Now the SBC and BBC engines have no accessories. What's a good guess for the accessories if using PS, A/C(new style), Alt, headers, carb and starter. 100lbs max?

It also looks like a BBC with Al heads and Al intake is only 70lbs more than a stock sbc.

Am I missing something here or are the weights of an LS1 and a SBC with Al heads and intake that close? After reading these numbers, it seems like a Big Block isn't that bad an option for the power.

I've seen LS1 engines listed as low as 380 and 400 lbs. Depends on which scale you use I guess.

Here is a great weight database that uses real life data. http://rcboat.com/Brian's%20stuff/camaro_database.htm

Depends on how you want to look at those numbers for older smallblocks and bigblocks- an all-iron BBC is about 200lbs heavier than an all-iron SBC. The iron heads alone on a BBC weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 75lbs, each.

I have never weighed a SB or a BB but I use 575# and 680# for them, ready to go, all iron..

amargari, the weights of the individual components like power steering pump, headers, carburetor, and starter are all listed in my database

Don't guess, add them up! Please let us know what you find.

You can be confident that all the data in my list are straight facts. They are results from actual parts measured on actual scales.
