I was just wondering what my oil pressure at idle should be at 1000rpm and at cruise? At 1000rpm its about 20psi and at cruise doing about 65mph its at 60psi? Does this sound normal? I know everyone is going to say it depends but Im just looking for a safe range. I recently changed the oil and seem to think the oil pressure is eratic now.

Mine are similar to yours, after the car has warmed up. I have higher psi at idle (appox 800-900 rpm) when the engine is cool.

The oil pressure spec for a small block Chevy is 35 psi at 1500 rpms. There is no spec for it under that rpm BUT the idiot light sensor is usually factory set at 3 to 5 psi.

Also consider what gauge and the accuracy of it. Thick oil= higher pressure so cold oil is thicker so it will read higher cold. Oil pressure is the resistance to the oil pumped thru your motor by the bearing clearances, larger clearances less oil pressure.

Your oil pressure seems fine, an old guide was 10 psi per 1000rpm.

sounds normal to me.

I say it's normal also. Remember, it only takes 7psi to turn off the factory "idiot" lights. So as long as you're not idling with less than 7-8 psi, then you're fine. Mine idles hot around 12-15 with 15W40...and it was built a little "loose".

Well its an Autometer carbon fiber gauge so I dont think its a cheap one and the oil is Castrol GTX 10w-30. If that all sounds right Ill go back to driving and I can stop worrying now!

Pressure isn't as important as volume.

I believe that when my car's warm and at idle (500 rpm in gear) I'm between 15-20psi.

Your oil pressure sounds okay. When the engine is warmed up, mine runs about the same as yours. About 20-25psi at idle and 60-65 at cruise.
