View Full Version : Serious 383 plans....
camaro71/holland 12-28-2004, 05:42:00 PM Hi there,
it's been a while since I posted my last question, where I asked for some opinions on different heads:
http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/009205.html
In meanwhile I've bought a set of slightly used AFR 195 'street-package' heads. After doing some research I found this CarCraft buildup with similar heads making 540hp.
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/84459/index.html
I want to copy this buildup in the future, but need some answers from the guys who know...
I would like to hit this engine with some 100 - 150hp of nitrous (since I already got it). To make it possible, what changes would be necessary to (or not):
1. the rotating assembly
2. ring gap
3. cam
and how about the CR - my heads are 74cc instead of 68 used for this setup.
Thanks, David

Turbo T/A 12-28-2004, 06:52:00 PM Don't believe everything your read.
You're not going to make 540HP with an out of the box street head (AFR195) and a solid flat tappet cam with only 383 cubic inches.
540HP = More head & more cam.....or more cubic inch

ZS10 12-29-2004, 03:56:00 AM Ya, I don't know if I'd expect to see 540 like they did, but it would sure be a great mill.
The rings will need a bit more gap for nitrous, usually it says on the package or on the instructions. Solid cams need adjusting every once in a while, so they kinda high mantenence. Some believe that a split pattern cam with slightly more duration on the exaust will take advantage of nitrous better.

camaro71/holland 12-29-2004, 05:25:00 AM Ok,
I know they pull all kind of tricks to get the numbers for the mags, but even if I end up with 490 - 500 hp, I sure be satisfied.
I'm just looking for a good combo to build ONE good engine and just enjoy it for the rest of the time ( including maintenance).
So I want to get the max performance out of these heads, by building a good engine around them. (The car doesn't make more than 1000 miles on the street)
Knowing that what do you think of these parts and the level of nitrous I want to use?
Thanks, David

Marv D 12-29-2004, 08:42:00 AM David, is this all street or does it also see the track (drag or roadrace?) Hydraulic rollers are nearly maintenance free, have serious power potential with better lift to duration ratios than any flat tappet cam. That comes with a price and other considerations like hydra-rev kit and max rpm, but makes for a very sweet weekend motor.
camaro71/holland 12-29-2004, 08:56:00 AM This car is for 90% a weekend warrior and for 10% it will be a strip car (in the future).
I'm fammiliar with the potentials of a hud roller (and the prises...).
Looking for a good combo or a COPLETE advise from someone who knows the facts and can accompany me (through mail or this site) to build one badass 383 SBC.
I'm trying to get the max possible from not too exotic parts, since I live in Europe which makes it even more expensive.
I'm gonna build it in steps, beginning with block preperation like 1/3 filling, grinding off some edges and more tricks I found in the high-perf literature.
Hig-perf/nitrous guidence = welcome.

Eric68 12-29-2004, 02:24:00 PM Here's my combo --
4.060" bore high nickel/tin 4 bolt block
SRP flat top pistons, compression is 11.3:1
Eagle 5.7" SIR Rods
Eagle 3.75" stroke external balance cast crank
Trick Flow 23* heads ported by me. 2.055 intake valves, flow 260 @ .550" lift
Victor Jr intake, mild porting
Comp street roller. 286/294 advertised, 248/254* @ 050, .570" lift, 108* LSA, installed at 104*
Hedman 1-3/4" headers, 3" X pipe into 2.5" mufflers.
3.73 gears
Coan 10" converter, home built TH350 transmission
Speed Demon 750 mechanical secondary carb
I estimate this engine is just over 500 HP on pump premium gas at the flywheel.
Has run 11.31 @ 122 MPH in a 3580# race weight 68 Camaro. Should go very low 11's maybe a high 10 next season. This car gets driven 65 miles to and from the track.
PS. The magazine articles are typically exaggerated. Dyno correctionb factors and a total lack of any engine driven accessories is the cause.

camaro71/holland 12-29-2004, 05:07:00 PM Thanks Eric,
any idea of your combo can live with a shot of nitrous?
When compared with eachother - which combo (CarCraft-Eric68) is better suit for nitrous use??
Any comments on the following setup???:
650SBC on nitrous (http://www.scatcrankshafts.com/News/tp.aug04_1.htm)
Thanks so far!
Eric68 12-30-2004, 06:30:00 PM Sure, if you want to run N2O get the cam on the standard 110* LSA rather than a custom 108*. Drop about 3/4 point of compression and you will be about 25 HP less on the motor and safe with up to about a 150 shot. In My Opinion . . .
BTW -- I did run that Magnum 294s they list in the article. My car went 11.6's at 117-118 MPH with everything else the same as it is now.

Mid 11's on pump gas, all motor . . . and no trailer.
gmachinz 01-01-2005, 04:05:00 PM David, I am an Eagle dealer. I am working a GP on all Eagle rotating assemblies, cranks, rods, etc. so if you want some suggestions/advice/pricing, drop me a line. gmachinz@juno.com Thanks, Jabin
p.s. since you are overseas (Holland?), I can save you on shipping, too!!
