Ok, for Christmas my girlfriend is buying me mufflers and I am getting the Jeg's exhaust kit. I dug around the internet and found Magnaflows for a good price. Well, I kept them on tap and looked some more, and the same site is carrying spintechs for a bit more. I was wondering which is more highly reguarded? I know a for a while Spintechs were really talked up on this bored, but that has kind of seemed to die down. I am looking for some direction here from those of you with experience...

I'll be ruinning Hooker headers up front into a 2.5" Jegs kit, and I will come out the back with it.

The Magnaflows are straight through (kinda like a tube or bullet design) and the Spintechs are out of the Pro Street series. What are your opinions?

Both are good mufflers, but Spin Techs are LOUD. As in you might as well run straight pipe loud

Hmmmm, I figured they'd be quieter than the Magnaflows, because the Magnaflows use the bullet/tube straight through design that has been known to make big power.

I will use this car for weekend cruising and maybe a little track duty, but mostly just for a cruiser probably. I like to pimp it around town to catch looks. Around these parts finding a good looking second gen is pretty hard. Mine is no where near as good as most of the ones on this site, but it it still a head turner.

spntechs are really not that loud and they're great flowing mufflers. go to http://www.spintechmufflers.com and go to their products page.if you want a good performance race muffler check out either their super /stock race quiet, the oval round shoot out and the round shoot out mufflers.i've heard alot of 360 sprint cars running the super/stock race quiet and just like the muffler says they're very quiet sounding mufflers

What about the pro streets? I ran wide open exhaust on my SHO for a while and loved every minute of it. Loudness really doesn't bother me much, but an interstate ride with loud exhaust without an o/d tranny would be kind of painful. lol

I have Magnaflows on my Mustang and love them. They are not too loud at all. They were much quieter than the Flowmasters I had on them for a while. Plus they look like a piece of art.

I've listened to sound clips of both, but I've heard the Magnaflows in person on a 496 mostly strip setup 71 Nova. I was surprised at how mellow they were at idle and cruise ,nice bark when you get on it. Add in the stainless construction, and outside of Borla, I think they're hard to beat.

These are going on my 509 when I get it shoehorned into the Z.

Thanks for the opinions. I just was dying to comment about the 509... Sounds like one heck of a motor, I wanna know your results. One day when I have a little money to put on a project I want a darkside motor. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif I'll see you on the darkside!

extreme79z,

One nice thing about the Spin Techs I didn't mention....they're about 4" thick, if you're looking at 3" Magnaflows, they're 5" thick, so you'll have to be careful with ground clearance.

The 509 is basically finished. Still have to fab the EFI plenum box, machine new fuel rails and order the serpentine setup. The clutch and T56 are ready to be bolted on.

Only one problem...wife wants to move this Spring or early Summer, so I've decided against tearing down the car until after the move. As I mentioned the 509 will have to be shoehorned in, the a/c box will have to be modified, and I'm not sure how much clearance I'll have at the floorbords for the headers. Tall deck + raised exhast ports = more work! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thats fine with me!

I am looking at the 2.5" Magnaflows and the 2.5 Spintechs... I figured the Magnaflows would be smaller since they are in the bullet shape? The Spintechs do appear to be a little bulky, but I think either of them will probably be alright.

I can't wait to see how your project turns out, I want to do something like that one day. I probably will never get the chance, but I can still dream.

I have the Magnaflows. I choose them because of their stainless construction and stainless/ceramic inner packing. Just like everyone says, they are quiet at idle and sound nice when you are on it. I use the word nice cautiously as I have them on my low compression, low performance 400. Once they are behind my built 455, that "nice" might turn into some serious bark.

I for one don't care for any of the reflective type mufflers. I believe all of them create resonance. The straight through absorbtion mufflers with sufficient case size (Magnaflow, Ultraflow, Maxflow, Goerlich and Straightline performance) all seem pretty quiet, flow the best and don't resonate. I would narrow down your choices to one of these mufflers. Magnaflow is the only stainless muffler at a reasonable price.

He, He!!

I just gotta, I just do!!

Sounds like "modern" glasspacks are being discussed here so why not go old school and run W/D/T Continental smooth perforated inner core glasspacks instead???

Bwet the price would be right.....

Carry-on...

Well I have heard both of these mufflers and they both sound good at idle but the spintechs will give you more Sound at wide open throttle but they also do not have packing materal inside to wear out in time so I would pick the Spintechs.
Now they do have Quiet Mufflers for the guys who want to be Stealthy.

and not all Spintech are Loud but they do have Loud mufflers like the pro Streets.
Also Keep in mind the more HP your engine makes the louder the muffler will be. No matter the brand.

I think cam LCA and duration have alot to do with how loud your muffler is its really the car thats loud sometimes depends what your sending down the pipe! I guy up the road has a very simular set up as me only hes got a monster cam, our motors are identical otherwise and we both have 3" flowmaster 40 series, his car is twice as loud as mine
i think its because of the valve overlap ?
Not sure though love someone elses idea on this
