I have been borrowing one from my machine shop for years. I just got my own for X-mas. $32 Pelouze digital postal scale from Office Max. Good enough to read down to 1g. I've been weighing everything I can lay my hand to. Mostly valvetrain stuff, where weight counts for a lot, but it's got enough range to do pistons, connecting rods, wrist pins, etc.

Here's a few eye openers I stumbed across in about 5 minutes of playing around:

Stock 1.94 intake valve with modest crud on it: 115g
Race prepped 2.08 intake valve (titanium) and no crud: 83g

Stock 1.25" SBC standard retainer: 23g
Stock 1.25" SBC Vortec retainer: 15g
Comp Cams 1.45" steel retainer: 33g

Inner dampening coil from stock 1.25" valve spring: 12g

Stock 350 12cc dished piston with modest crud: 556g
Keith Black flattop: 539g
Stock wrist pin: 143g
Keith Black pin: 146g
SpeedPro HD pin: 188g

This is the best "tool" I've gotten in a while. I think I like it almost as much as my valve spring tester. I dare you to get one and not compare everything you took out of an engine with e4verything you put into it!

Yep, I bought one to weigh clutch weights and ended up using it for a pile of stuff
