Just got a Crower cam and I was wondering what type and kind of lifters would be the best with it. The lift is 454 intake 463 Exhust and the Duration is 286 on the Intake and 289 on the exhust. It is going into a 350 with flat top piston, 375 hp heads...

All hyd lifters are the same

Ah, but what about rhoads lifters? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

Do a search for them. There are some guys out there who swear by them (never used them myself). I particularly recall one guy with a Poncho bigblock in a big wagon running 12's or something like that. Said he sped up and gained streetability with the rhoads lifters (had a big-ass hyd cam)

Rhoads lifters are excellent lifters for THE GARBAGE CAN!!!

Don't waste your money, or the metal it takes to make them. They're nothing but pointless noise makers for people that don't know how to pick the correct cam for their application in the first place.

LOL. No I didn't. I just got word of my dental plan rates going up while coverage goes down. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/mad.gif

Anyway, I'll use a quote from David Vizard's Chevrolet Small Block V-8 Camshafts and Valvetrains.

With a short period cam (he used a Comp Cams 268HE), simply replacing the lifters with faster leakdown lifters made only marginal improvements in the bottem-end power yet reduced power output quite noticeably in the mid top-end rpm range.

The moral here is that using rapid leakdown lifters on a short-period cam is not going to achieve very much. If you want the extra vacuum and low-end performance of a rapid leakdown lifter, then you shuold have chosen a slightly shorter cam with selected stiff lifter to get all the top end possible!

Then later goes on to say,
In using a longer cam, such as the Competition Cams 292 HE shown here, quite a span in the torque output produced by regular lifters compared to that of rapid leakdown lifters. On a cam of this duration, it is not until 5,200rpm that the regular lifters outpace the output of the rapid leakdown lifters.

And finally
However, there's another point to consider. Where would the torque output lie if a slightly shorter cam with stiff lifters been selected? The power curve implies that a slightly shorter cam has the potential on a larger cam to give the same bottom end and top end as rapid leakdown lifters. If this is the case, it will make the rapid leakdown lifters redundant.

They're in my car now, not by choice, and they're just noisy. I can't say whether or not they're doing any harm or good since I didn't build the engine, nor have I replaced them with regular lifters to find out. I'm presently building a roller cam engine to replace the 350 in my car so I guess I can only go by what Mr. Vizard says. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Cool....I am not looking for the precise match. I really want this cam for its sound.

And about that insurance....Please, don't get me started on that. I would not be able to post anything on this board again if I voiced my thoughts on them. Insurance is noting but legalized Extortion...nothing more and nothing less.

That would be Jim Hand's 11.3 second 4075# Pontiac station wagon. His cam is a Wolverine WG5059 - 234/244 @ .05" - not what you'd call a 'big-ass' cam ( not to be confused with Letterman's Big Ass Ham ) in a 473" motor. He uses the Rhodes for the smooth idle and good vacuum. 14" at a 750 rpm idle.
I asked him about Rhodes lifters and he sent me a large treatise on the effects of a variable duration lifters:

I had a set;seemed to help the low end some. However, the racket they make is atrocious. Solid lifter sound? X 4

OR, forget about hy-lifters and pick a comparable solid cam AND gain say 3 to 4 percent more power everywhere!!!

pdq67

PS., but you have to lash it every so often like say every second/third oil change after she breaks in. No big deal to me at all AND I love the sewing machine sound that only a solid cam cam make!! Means power ta me!!!
