I know that these things have been hyped out the wazoo by none other than Mario Andretti himself for well over 2 years now. And I RARELY find that anything advertised this hard works worth a damn. HOWEVER.... in the world of competition mufflers I've noticed that there are people I know and respect on other boards saying that these things actually work, and work better than just about anything else from other manufacturers (including Flowmaster, etc.) p.s.- I beleive Dynomax and Magnaflow are owned by the same company.

Now, these were comments related to large diameter (4"+) competition mufflers, so maybe the stuff they sell at the local muffler shop for street cars is junk, but it's interesting info anyway.

Near as I can tell, the old "straight through" muffler concept seems to be back in favor, as opposed to the "box of baffles" like Flowmaster and many others use.

I guess I'm looking for opinions/comments from those who may have used these products. Do I have any real performance reason to yank off my 2 chamber Flows and install (gulp!) Magnaflows?

I got my magnaflows of the shelf at a local chainstore. There the polished ss versions. Excellent quality. There also straight throughs. Even with the offset I could see clear through them from end to end, and the perforated pipe inside has a extremely smooth bend in it. They have to flow great. They sure sound great. I would'nt trade them for flowmasters, nevahhh http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif.

Look at a cutaway of a flowmaster, they look very restrictive.

I forgot to mention that mine are size 2 1/2"

I guess that's kinda what the new "theory" is behind these mufflers. Straight through design but with full pipe size inside and no "sawcut" edges hanging out in the breeze to restrict flow like an old Glasspack.

Interesting side note- my 92 Camaro "spare parts car" has an ancient SLP muffler on it (3" in, 2-1/2" dual outlet tailpipes, both on the far side of the muffler). Like a Magnaflow, you can see right through it to the smooth y-split and on out the other side where the tailpipes exit. Stright through design, full pipe size, no sharp edges, and very smooth and minimal bends. Probably flows real well and certainly this car goes quicker/faster than you would expect it to (although I wouldn't go so far as to say it's entirely because of this muffler). Also, you would think it would be really loud, but it's not- considerably quieter than an equivalent Flowmaster muffler, especially when just cruising around town at part throttle.

Just to save face for the Flowmasters, My car is just over a tenth quicker in the 1/4 mile having the exhaust system removed (60 pounds of weight) compared to installed, this is with the 50 series 3 chamber 3" version. This is on a high 10, low 11 second N/A car.
I gladly give up the insignificant ET in exchange for a quiet car.
