View Full Version : How much warpage is allowable on a new manifold?
thrasher 08-17-2007, 08:04:56 PM I received a new Weiand Vortec Action Series manifold.
I layed a straight edge across one side and it looked, not perfect, but not bad.
The other side has a long obvious low spot across two of the ports.
I stuck a feeler gauge under it and came up with .011
Is that ok for a daily driver? I sure as heck don't want to put it on and then have to take it apart shortly because the manifold is leaking around the ports.
There is a small sticker on the manifold stating cast in CHINA!!!
I wonder if it was cast there and machined here?
rustbucket79 08-18-2007, 12:02:04 AM Have the manifold surfaced, then you are guaranteed success. .011 warpage is a lot and can have the potential for vacuum leaks or oil leaks.
Cable Slacker 08-18-2007, 12:19:21 AM send it back and buy something made in usa!!

Make sure there's no lead paint on it .....lol

Better idea

Damn straight.
If MFG don't start seeing the repercussions of pawning CRAP from china on us to make stuff 10% cheaper, we won't have anyone here working at jobs that pay enough to buy their crap.

I second that motion!!! <rant on>Holley is flat driving their companies in the ground with poor products and poor service and Weiand used to have a good rep. I know some people will cut to the last cent, but I'm proud to have the Eddy stuff.<rant off>
Yes - call whoever you bought it from and explain the problem. Ask for a RMA or refund.
rindoze 08-18-2007, 12:18:26 PM max allowable warpage is supposed to be 1 thousandth per cylinder so it should be 4 thousandths max. 11 is quite large, where exactly is this measurement coming from? and that 4 thousandths is for deck and cylinder head surface which is more crutial to be a tight seal.
bracketracer-78 08-18-2007, 12:22:03 PM Send it back. It's new and it should bolt on with no problems.
rustbucket79 08-18-2007, 03:05:03 PM Seems to me I've seen offshore manufacturing stickers on Edelbrock stuff before. I would be suprised if any of the large manufacturers used 100% american products and labour in their stuff. (castings/valves/etc)
Silicone can eliminate sealing issues on most any manifold, but a flat manifold will seal without needing to use it. (on the gaskets) I've had to surface about 1 in 10 aftermarket manifolds that we install, and no brand is perfect.
Little Naples 08-18-2007, 06:40:26 PM Even "Made in America" doesn't mean anything anymore, because most of the workers in America are foreigners anyway.

SNAP ON

Manifold to intake.Right between two of the ports.
Cylinders on the end, like 1 and 3.

From what a member of another board said about a visit to the Ebrock manufacturing plant in CA, you pretty much described what he saw.
You can take that with a grain of salt if you wish because I have never been there and have not witnessed working conditions at the plant. But it wouldn't surprise me.

That is funny!
thrasher 08-20-2007, 03:21:03 PM Well here's the skinny on the manifold. It's on it's way back for an exchange.
If the other looks remotly close to it it's going back and I'm getting an Ebrock.
Once I looked at the box I find it's not all China's fault.
The box proclaims it's designed, machined, and boxed in the US,
using a China casting.
thrasher 08-30-2007, 06:09:02 PM I have my new intake manifold.I just had them replace it with another, same brand, same part number.
The outcome is the same. One side is pretty flat but the other side now has just a .008 low spot. The outside of the casting still doesn't look good.
This leads me to think the way they are machining them is incorrect.Either that or the way they hold them in place for the machining is faulty and the intake is slipping. Not good in either case.
I guess I'm gunna to have to get an Ebrock after all.
