I dropped ina brand new edelbrock performer crate engine and was getting read to try the new air cleaner when i suddenly realized it wasn't going to clear my stock hood. No way I can change hood with custom flames freshly painted on it. engine has a street thunder carb w/ elect choke. Any ideas? From the best I can measure i have just under 3" of clearance.

Some catalogs say that a full drop base air cleaner will not fit over an electric choke. A 7/8" drop will. I think with the 3" element and a 7/8" drop you should be good to go.
(I am assuming you mean 3" clearance from the air cleaner mounting flange to the hood)

well you can lower the motor down into the frame. I droped mine down 1-1/2" with a set of solid motor mounts.

I used a drop base air cleaner and made a 1/2" spacer to raise it to clear the eddy choke. I have an air gap manifold and thunder carb. just fits under the stock hood. 3"x14" filter STP SA136 if I recall. (not the one in my avatar)

Had the same problem. I used a full drop base air cleaner, 2.5" filter with a filter cover, and cut a 15" hole under my stock cowl hood so it sat up inside the cowl. Im not using eletric choke though......

for even more added clearance, go with a summit 2" re-usable air filter and re-usable air filter top.

great idea.
i think i have to run your set also.
put a new dominator intake and carb on, and mine wont fit under a 4" cowl.
i think it might fit with that setup.

what material did you use for the spacer?

you can buy spacers at most auto speed shops. I had an old spacer that was about 1" tall and just cut it down.
