malibu2slow 12-05-2004, 04:56:00 PM Well after having a slight accadent with my old 400 ,something about wrong jets in nos and going dead lean, then learning that there was a re-used ring by the builders of the old motor , i took the carcauss to my favorite machinist who hooked me up .060 ,decked, same Xe282 solid, super vic,750 speed demon ,9.5" torco/art car converter,3.42,235 60 15 ET raidals,125 hp nos on last 2 runs

Dirt Reynolds 12-05-2004, 06:11:00 PM Malibu - those are great times for unported Vortecs! Gary Penn of GMPP made 480HP in a 355" motor with unported Vortecs, and with nitrous, made 650HP on the dyno. All of this with flat-top pistons and a .485" lift cam. So for those who doubt the Vortecs' ability to make good power in unported form, take note.

stangslayer 12-05-2004, 11:08:00 PM Nice times 2slow! Didn't you have an RPM intake that you were going to test out? My combo is really close to yours except I have the RPM intake and my car is only running 12.4 http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
BTW What's your compression ratio at?

Nothing wrong with your times, Stang! 2Slow is running more stall, that's one reason he is running 11.70's N/A. He is also running an Xtreme solid cam, which is another benefit. Your 12.41 is a long ways from your earlier 13.XX you were running last year with the hyperpathetic pistons http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
Vortecs impress me more and more every day. People always tell me they are too small for a 400 engine, but with the flow numbers they put out and the swirl they give, who cares? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Makes for a helluva torquey street engine. Can't beat it!

malibu2slow 12-06-2004, 07:04:00 AM i didnt type out the 60's cause the slips are up stairs but i beleive if i can get it to hook better 1.55-1.59 i can improve on my times the best was only a 1.68,those times were also done w/o any jetting changes 76/86 ,34' timming,5600 shifts.I have kb 172 (flat tops),and close to zero deck hight so that = about 11.3:1 ,the converter works awsome i can hold it to 3200 on the line and it flashes to about 4600 but drives as good as any high stalh on the street can be ,oh yea it was about 46 with no humidty,
I really want to try the RPM but i get a little leary of making changes like that at the track cause its 50 miles from home and i like the vic with the spray
I've read about Garys motor on team chevelle thats really impressive gives all of us something to shoot for http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

And how do pistons effect your ET? Is there something I'm missing, other than they have to be in the engine? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/confused.gif

Dirt Reynolds 12-06-2004, 03:42:00 PM What I find really impressive stang, is your 3.42 rear gear. I think that is a wise choice. For quite some time I have been thinking of going down in rear gearing, to either 3.73 or 3.42. The 4.10 is simply too steep for the 400, at least for my setup(s). The car feels like it wants less gear going through the traps.
The RPM might give you even more midrange torque. Your setup is a very good compromise for the street and strip.
Maybe I oughta see if I can buy my old Vortec setup back again. I'm in the middle of doing more porting work to them, but I sure am curious as to how they'd work with my Comp 306S and less rear gear in the car.

LOL! I think he had a piston meltdown, or maybe I am thinking of someone else? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
stangslayer 12-06-2004, 09:48:00 PM Well, it wasn't a "melt down", but I did find a cracked piston (didn't have time to fall apart and wreck anything else) and thats when I went to the forged pistons and zero decked the block.
The reason I'm so curious about the RPM vs victor intake is that Im looking at spraying my engine with around 150hp nitrous (more if I get a single plane) but I still need it good power off the bottle.
