I bought a Melling M77 pump, and a 7 qt oil pan (off... ebay... yeah I know cheap parts are cheap for a reason).
The pan came with a bolt-on pickup tube that has an OD that is the same size as the ID of the oil pump's pickup hole. I can't get the pickup tube to go into the oil pump, and don't want to break/bend/dent the tube by forcing it.
How do I get it on there?

go to autozone and borrow a pick-up tube installation tool. It allows you to safely persuade (aka hammer) the pick-up tube into the pump.
I also have a melling pump and used the tool. It was my first time. The tool is idiot proof - I am evidence of that.

The 'bolt' is just a sefety feature. The pickup tube is a press fit into the oil pump. The right tool for the job!!!

^^ yep,, it BETTER be a press fit, or it'll leak air into the fluid stream. that wouldn't be good at all. should have a press fit that is very tough to rotate into position without the hammer once installed. seams that they never press in exactly into the position you want them into,, so you have to tap it arround a bit to line everything up for the secondary attachment bolt.
